Obsession Beats Discipline. Every Single Day.

A lot of crypto interest in quantum is based on a misunderstanding. Shor's algorithm has nothing to do with 'breaking' Bitcoin; it is related to RSA, a totally different algorithm that isn't used (directly) for much any more (although indirectly, it does power a lot of internet encryption). Separately, I'm more bullish than ever on quantum. Back in 2018, I took my first Quantum Computing class under Richard Josza, inventor of the Deutsch-Josza algorithm, one of the first and easiest to have provable 'quantum supremacy'. Next year, I started Part III of the Mathematical Tripos, took a few more advanced classes, and did a research project on IBM's Qiskit machines later that year. The (then) state of the art hardware was extremely noisy, and I spent a while working on its error models. I turned down a quantum computing PhD offer to work in industry. My main reason was the massive gap between what the media was reporting and the actual frontier of the industry. I would go to conferences where a bunch of startups would claim massive breakthroughs on spicy sounding topics like 'quantum machine learning', only to go back to my professors and be told they were (almost) all a scam. It sounded like a rug. What's changed? The people, mostly. Startups like @PsiQuantum are raising at incredible valuations and hiring the best people in Physics. I'm hearing they will drop some exciting news soon!
