@BenS_MTG 15 year software engineer here. If you need a regular release schedule, never plan for Mondays because of how many three-day weekends there are throughout the year. Tuesday is actually the best day for this. Annoying for us players, but an unfortunate reality for software teams.

I can understand wotc wanting people incentivized to have to play release weekend at the local stores, but what I can't understand is why the set comes online Tuesday instead of Monday. It just creates this one awkward lame day where you want to play the new set but cant!

@GergelyOrosz @ericjeker While I may not save time in the actual production of code, I most certainly am more productive in all the other parts of the job. Documentation, writing good commit messages, thinking through complex interactions of state machines to find gaps, finding missing tests, etc.

@ericjeker Tons of golden nuggets in the replies - thank you! Like this one. I am "not faster" for things where I really care about quality: and AI tools cannot one shot what I need, and so after the first pass I need to get more into it. x.com/thepanta82/sta…
Panta@thepanta82

@GergelyOrosz Also, the less you care about output, the more productive you are. I'm at my most productive when vibe coding internal tools, where I don't even look at the code. I suspect what senior leaders are doing is more like that and less like producing critical infrastructure.

The more I use AI tools, the more I have to admit that I'm not that much more productive... I simply FEEL that much more productive. In reality, the context switching of kicking several things off wipes out my perceived productivity gains. At least in many/most cases!

@Sierkovitz We knew the day would come when we’d move from quadratic to exponential scaling factors. I just didn’t know we’d get there so soon!

@Sierkovitz Even better is the elf lord that brings back elf spells when he dies, which you get back with the command, which you then loop some more.

So far we have a fun set - let's see how replayable it is. But i'm here to show you a great combo my opponent presented to me, and won a game from very far behind thanks to: Turns out Command many times is a good thing.

@Sierkovitz Power is also overrepresented statistically due to the power “slot.” I don’t know how much more often we get power than we “should,” but I bet you can see how often one of those 11 is seen versus if it were truly random…

Power 9 is no more. It is power 11. Here is how i found it: So.... It was put to my attention that Arena powered cube never has packs with 2 pieces of power 9 in them. I was sceptical, but turns out it is true. I looked at ~18000 drafts and results are striking. 1/5

@Milski15 @lsv I bet they’ve tweaked that percentage and watched the play rates change, too. Seems like way more power this cycle than the first one in my drafts & games. They’re definitely seen more often than they should be.

@Milski15 @lsv It’s more likely a slot with a certain percentage of being power. So one card in any pack has (for example) a 10% chance of being power. The other 90% of the time it’s just a random card like every other slot in the pack. That’s way easier to implement than a two-pass check.

I don’t understand why they decided to do this - it takes more work and I don’t think it even is a positive. Opening double power is fun, taking screenshots of it is fun, and getting passed power is fun. Baffling decision 😂

I AM BEING SO SERIOUS: I am officiating a wedding and the bride has suggested that I put a Magic: the Gathering reference into the ceremony What is the most thematic/symbolic/coolest-sounding thing I could say after "by the power vested in me by..." ? thank you vorthoses 🙏

@jakeformayor It’s even more if you count the cards that are programmed for Alchemy effects but not craftable (like power 9 from Oracle of the Alpha).

@SaffronOlive Seems like they’re trying to get to a playable Vintage Cube. They’re not adding them just for Brawl, that’s for sure. Power 9 are already coded, and with these additions they’re getting pretty close to a decent cube experience.

Two new Anthologies dropping on Arena tomorrow. Adding Wrenn and Six right after Strip Mine hilarious. Mox Opal should make an impact on older formats and the various Goyfs are interesting. magic.wizards.com/en/news/mtg-ar…

Me and @devoncestes will be going for a pre-dinner stroll in Berlin tomorrow around 4PM, maybe see some sites, and grab a 🍻 or two. If you're in town for @CodeBEAMio EU and would like to chat some @elixirlang and life with us, shoot me or Devon a DM! #myelixirstatus

@adolfont The story of intentionally passing over systems that don’t allow managers to grow their team is alluring to developers who like to put blame on managers, but likely false. It’s much more likely that people are afraid of perceived risk, which we already know to be true.

@adolfont “Nobody ever got fired for buying GE.” That was the old saying, and now it’s “Nobody ever got fired for choosing JS.” It’s about doing the “safe” thing that doesn’t expose you or your organization to perceived risk, like choosing a niche technology for core systems.

Assuming it is true that languages like Elixir, Clojure, and Erlang require fewer people to build the same systems, is this another reason for their low adoption? Does this account reinforce the need for research into human factors in software engineering?
