@Dorizzdt I just recently installed Unhook, which redirect to my Subscriptions page instead of the homepage, and because I don't follow that kind of channel I don't see those idiotic faces anymore. And then you have the "Don't recommend this channel anymore" button. Works well.

@stjohnbaptiste Ahah, the "Similar to games you've played" section always cracks me up. I think they only use tags for that.

I don't think age has any influence here. Finding a good "why" and sticking to it is more important. Using a proper method too, like, not Duolingo. Read about Stephen Krashen and language acquisition instead. And as Seth Godin said, because it is hard it's worth pursuing. If it was easy everybody would do it. Chinese is a type 5 language, it requires 2000+h to learn and obviously you can't learn by reading it. Good luck. 🙂

How hard would it be to learn Mandarin in your forties? Is it too late?

@pikuma @loftwah The world is already massively influenced by the Chinese. Learning Mandarin or Cantonese already provide value if you want to do business with them, or simply discover their culture differently than what you read in the media. Go there, talk to them.

@waim @mitchellh The problem is you cannot use the word "truthfully" and hope companies will self-regulate. Business doesn't work like this. That's why we have cookie banners. Companies could just add a small accept/refuse button but they try to manipulate and coerce people instead.

@mitchellh This will end up being like the cookie popup. In the future realistically no one ever gets to talk to a human. I would prefer, if I ask an AI, are you an AI, it just truthfully answer yes - and which company it works for - whether it’s voice or chat.

It's so insanely disrespectful for an AI agent to talk to real people without consent or at least disclosure. This is the type of stuff I'm hugely supportive of government regulation. The FCC must expand the definition of robocalling and TCPA-style regulation to online AI.

@Dorizzdt Totally agree, being at the top of the most hated software companies is not an achievement to be proud of. But certainly the returns were good for the investors, at least during a few years.

@NeroLXIV @ID_AA_Carmack This is complete non-sense. There are hundreds of repos that were gifted back by big corpos, and they regularly contribute to thousands of repositories. You just don't know them or choose to ignore them to suit your anti-big-money narrative.

@ID_AA_Carmack The problem is that we are not gifting it to the world but to large corporations that do not want to gift back..

I know there is some overlap between open source and anti-AI activists, but I have a hard time reconciling it. My million+ open source LOC were always intended as a gift to the world. Yes, I would make arguments about how it would strengthen our communities, and the GPL would prevent outright exploitation by our competitors, but those were to allay fears of my partners to allow me to make the gift. AI training on the code magnifies the value of the gift. I am enthusiastic about it! Some people do look at open source as a tool for social change, career advancement, or reputation building, but those are all downstream of the gift.
Rich Whitehouse@DickWhitehouse

Genuinely devastating take to see from someone who popularized the GPL across so many communities. Fails to appreciate the social and cultural importance of the license.

@mandolinaes Slowly, we are reverting back to building a network of fans, connecting with them personally, instead of the current shotgun strategy. This is also in my opinion what AI will achieve. People disconnecting from a feed of fakes and reconnecting with the authors they trust.

A lot of artists didn’t stop creating. They just stopped trying to be visible. There’s a point where you realize the energy required to stay “present” is bigger than the energy needed to make the work 😔 and something in you decides the work still matters more
