I think it took watching CGI battles properly to appreciate the spectacle of real men on real horses charging real squares, across a vast expanse of battlefield.
When I first watched it in the 80s it seemed a bit boring; now I find it utterly jaw-dropping

Finally saw Sergei Bondarchuk’s epic ‘Waterloo’ (1970) in its entirety. Dismissed at the time, the Italian-Russian coproduction is one of the one of the greatest war movies ever made - part Eisenstein, part Sergio Leone - with an astonishing performance by the great Rod Steiger
