@drhingram Three thoughts: Cost to the public purse. Lots of "odd but completely harmless" would be locked up. Women were disproportionately locked up - often for life - for "crimes" such as promiscuity and disobedience/willfulness.

I grew up in an area with two mental hospitals. You would see staff transporting patients around and they looked calm, most often probably sedated. I mean it kindly when I say that we should reopen the mental hospitals and have these people committed.
