a big part of the dotcom computing experience were unbootable systems due to bad disk sectors, such as due to demagnetization. there was a sophisticated assembly program called spinrite to salvage such systems. everyone had their own crazy backup setup

I feel like airline systems would be fascinating to try to rearchitect using modern tech. Complex, interesting, realtime problems – both from a distributed systems as well as a human-computer interaction perspective – and the existing systems really aren't up to scratch ✈️
