I know it's everywhere on the news, but you underestimate just how bad it really is. I just had the most stressful 30 hours of my adult life My (not so distant) relative in her late 40s got scammed for nearly 100kUSD, her and her family's entire life savings and nest eggs in 5 months and is contemplating the worst now. My soul sinks with each message I exchange with them, just seeing how nefarious the whole thing is They lived a very comfortable lifestyle for many years since they started living together He earned more than 20k RMB per month, always left her with more than half, for 4 years they amassed savings for their future He went to work abroad and 4 months in the technologically illiterate woman was being roped into an investment scam, out of boredom and out of feeling inadequate and not contributing enough She never came from wealth, far from it - always depended on toxic husband before then on a (thankfully) normal and hard working bf now who loved her for everything This is not a sub 100IQ person most people on the internet would make you believe fall for these rudimentary schemes Its the classic "invest in something online and it generates profit and whoops you can't withdraw without topping up and whoops you need to pay tax before withdrawing" while you send money to a differently named mule every time She fell for this from a random DM on 快手 (one of many tiktok clones in China) from someone who pretended to share the mutual interests, hobbies. These people aren't your normal scammers, they know how to exploit every single angle with precision and tap into every possible weakness These people have no morals nor fear that they will get caught, because they operate this as a well oiled machine, not a one and done - they have more than just scripts The person gave their passport picture to register on this "online business", they gave a bunch of information, they got roped into draining every single savings, cash deposit, bank account and dropping it into this. Again, I underline, you have no idea how much these fucking subhumans have perfected their methods over the past decade - nothing can stop it once it happens. The victim won't even communicate with their loved ones about it until its painfully obvious and there's nothing left but admit defeat. And, even then, they will be reluctant to report crimes and in no small part due to companies/governments not being able to do anything to help you out. I urge you, please, if you have someone who you think might be a victim at some point in the future: mention and use this story, lie, hyperbolize, exaggerate because no matter how much you do this, its still not nearly as bad as it actually is in reality you might think you know better or are safe because you are terminally online, and so do your parents and grandparents are as well - BUT YOU ARE WRONG, they are online at the wrong time there is a special place in hell for these people perpetrating these, i dont know when or where, but it will happen
