Last week in Mumbai, I met a childhood friend after almost 6 years. We’ve known each other for over 30 years, studied together, and seen each other through thick and thin. He’s a proud Maharashtrian, born and brought up in Maharashtra. Me? While my parents migrated from Rajasthan to Mumbai in the 80s, I was born and raised in the city. I may not speak fluent Marathi, but I understand it well and speak a broken version of it. I grew up being inspired by Shivaji Maharaj, and in every way, Mumbai - and Maharashtra - are a part of my identity. But during our conversation, he casually remarked that I am “not really a Maharashtrian” since I can’t speak Marathi fluently. Now, I know him well. He’s highly educated, an MBA from a top Indian institute, and one of the most liberal people I know. I’m certain he meant no harm. Yet, the comment shook me. If someone this educated, this liberal, and this close to me thinks this way today…What does it say about where we are heading as a society? This isn’t just about Maharashtra. It happens everywhere: - A North Indian in Karnataka struggling with Kannada. - A South Indian in Delhi being mocked for their accent. - A North-Eastern in any metro being asked “where are you really from?”. The list goes on. Regional pride is beautiful, but regionalism at the cost of exclusion is dangerous. We are all Indians first. Our languages and cultures should enrich us, not divide us. It’s high time we ask ourselves: are we building walls around our regional identities, or are we opening doors to celebrate each other? Our Constitution says and so we were taught in school 'Unity in Diversity', but is it really so today?
