Ambassador @MAshrafHaidari: "Ladies and gentlemen, we stand at a crossroads. As of April this year, the world counted more than 122 million people forcibly displaced — the highest in modern history. That means one in every 65 people on Earth has been forced to flee their home. Imagine for a moment if one-third of Indiana’s population were uprooted overnight, carrying only what they could on their backs, with no certainty of shelter, safety, or food. That is the daily reality for millions. Behind these numbers are children unable to attend school, parents separated from their families, and entire communities stripped of dignity and identity. And their displacement is driven not by one factor, but by three converging forces: conflict, climate, and poverty — the triple crises of our fragile world. Two and a half thousand years ago, Euripides wrote: 'There is no greater sorrow on Earth than the loss of one’s native land.' That remains true today. No one leaves home willingly. People flee only when staying becomes more dangerous than the perilous journey ahead." “Nearly three decades after the Ottawa Treaty, displaced people remain among the most vulnerable to landmines and unexploded ordnance. In 2023 alone, more than 5,700 people were killed or maimed. A mine-free world remains an unfulfilled promise for those forced to flee, return, or survive.” — Ambassador @MAshrafHaidari, DI President and Founder

Easter is a story of resurrection—but also of refuge. A persecuted man, betrayed and condemned, rises in triumph. For those fleeing oppression today, Easter is a powerful symbol: from suffering comes hope, and from exile, the promise of new life. #Easter #RefugeesWelcome

Today’s refugee regime is no longer aligned with reality. Close to 120 million people have forcibly been displaced, while the drivers of displacement now extend far beyond the older legal framework built mainly around persecution and war. The traditional “durable solutions” are also failing. Resettlement remains far below need, wealthy states resist both larger quotas and meaningful local integration, and return to unsafe countries with no real reintegration support is not a durable solution. @displacedint

The 1933 Refugee Convention was the first legally binding treaty that included the principle of "non-refoulement", which guarantees that refugees should not be forcefully returned to their country of origin if that compromised their safety. buff.ly/AvnzLUw #WithRefugees

DI Senior Fellow Remshay Ahmed writes in Displaced Voices: "Since the October 2025 bombing of militant hideouts across the Pak-Afghan border, the Pakistan Army has further exacerbated the ongoing crisis. The current expulsion campaign—aimed largely at undocumented Afghans—is being carried out with a speed and indifference that strips away any pretense of humanitarian concern. Families who have spent decades here are being uprooted in days. People who have never set foot in Afghanistan are being dumped across a border into a country on the brink of collapse." Pakistan’s ongoing forced repatriation of Afghan refugees is a moral and political outrage. It is sending vulnerable people back to the very conditions of repression, insecurity, and deprivation that Pakistan helped create and sustain before and after 2021. As Displaced International warned, Afghans are already trapped in a deepening humanitarian emergency, and forced return only compounds their suffering. Statement by Displaced International on the Displacement of More Than 100,000 Afghans Amid Escalating Pakistan-Afghanistan Hostilities displacedinternational.org/statement-by-d… This policy must end immediately. Governments, humanitarian actors, and international institutions should press Pakistan to halt forcible returns, protect Afghan refugees, and uphold basic international protection norms. We also urge everyone to read, sign, and share DI’s global petition and stand with Afghan refugees against yet another preventable injustice. We at Displaced International thank His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for standing with those forcibly displaced by war and for urging an end to conflict through diplomacy, dialogue, and peace. The displaced do not need more war -- they need protection, dignity, and the chance to return home in safety. @Pontifex

Pope Leo XIV renews his call for a ceasefire in the war on Iran, urging leaders to pursue peace through dialogue rather than weapons as hatred and violence deepen and more than one million people remain forcibly displaced.

It’s been over two years since war erupted in Sudan, fueling the world’s largest displacement crisis with 12+ million uprooted and 30 million needing urgent aid. Civilians face relentless violence, starvation, and blocked humanitarian access. The world must act now and #KeepEyesOnSudan.

"To any refugee or Afghan entrepreneur reading this: yes, the system is tough. Yes, you’ll face barriers. But your lived experience has already prepared you to overcome them. Don’t wait for the perfect time or perfect idea. Start small. Learn constantly. Take the leap. Your business could become more than a source of income. It could be a statement—that you belong, that you contribute, and that success after displacement is not just possible—it’s powerful," writes DI Fellow Said Farooq Perzada. displacedinternational.org/from-displacem…

The war in Iran has displaced over 3.2 million of its own citizens, while the country continues to host approximately 4 million Afghan refugees and migrants. International leaders must urgently prioritize conflict resolution through diplomacy to halt this forced displacement and prevent a compounded humanitarian catastrophe. Displaced International calls for immediate ceasefires, protection of all vulnerable populations, and sustained global support for host communities. unhcr.org/news/press-rel…

The war with Iran has already deepened existing humanitarian crises across the less developed and least developed world. It is pushing fragile states closer to collapse, further weakening their ability to protect and serve the most vulnerable. The consequences will be devastating: tens of millions more people driven into deeper poverty and many forcibly displaced by rising insecurity, hunger, climate shocks, disrupted transport, and shrinking emergency aid. Recent and protracted conflicts must be de-escalated and brought to an end. The longer they continue, the more they will punish innocent civilians far beyond the battlefield, especially in countries least able to absorb the shock.
The Economist@TheEconomist

The number of people facing acute hunger could reach record levels in 2026, if the conflict in Iran does not end soon. The Economist has analysed some of the emerging markets most at risk, examining their reliance on imported energy and the fragility of their economies. Explore the full list: econ.st/489se4d

"The World Health Organization now estimates that about 1 in 127 people globally is autistic, while UNHCR reported that 117.3 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide at the end of June 2025. UNHCR also notes that around 40% of forcibly displaced people are children. Although precise global data on autistic people in displacement remain limited, these figures strongly suggest that hundreds of thousands of displaced children—and many more adults—are autistic, yet remain largely invisible in humanitarian planning and response." Ambassador @MAshrafHaidari, Founder and President of Displaced International, stated: “On this World Autism Awareness Day, we urge governments, humanitarian agencies, donors, and civil society to move beyond awareness alone and implement autism-inclusive policies across refugee, asylum, and displacement systems. Displaced autistic people must be seen, protected, and meaningfully supported through accessible education, healthcare, case management, and livelihood pathways tailored to their needs and strengths. Upholding their rights and dignity is not only a moral and legal imperative; it is essential to building more resilient, inclusive, and humane communities.” Read full statement: displacedinternational.org/from-awareness…
