My statement in connection with today’s corrupt Supreme Court decision. We will not rest until the John Robert Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is the law of the land. And we end the era of voter suppression in the United States once and for all.

Today's Supreme Court decision reverses hard-won progress under the Voting Rights Act. It means less representation for millions of Black Americans and other voters of color, as lawmakers gain greater ability to manipulate their districts. There will be more extreme partisan gerrymandering, lopsided elections, less accountable government, and policies that hurt rather than help with everyday life. But this is no time to be demoralized, because we know it does not have to be this way. We can mobilize around reform, new laws, and where necessary, constitutional amendments for fairer government. Only then can we feel the benefits of a balanced Court, a truly representative Congress, and an election system free from the distorting power of extreme corporate and partisan manipulation.

@joekent16jan19 "Joe, you resigned claiming 'no imminent threat' from Iran & blamed Israel for it all. Now, with them racing toward nuclear breakout, you downplay risks & push ending the blockade that's cratering their revenue. Any reasonings to justify retreating to fortress America, right?"

Continuing the blockade puts far more pressure on us than on Iran. Iran has proven it can endure economic pain—it has been doing so since 1979. The blockade will not force Iran to abandon uranium enrichment, ballistic missiles, or its proxy networks. Instead, the blockade is hurting the American people and creating serious domestic pressure on POTUS: Gas prices will continue to rise as we head into the midterms, harming the working class voters who overwhelmingly backed Trump and Republicans—putting GOP majorities in serious jeopardy. Staging three carrier battle groups plus a massive build up of airpower in CENTCOM to enforce the blockade is unsustainable—it hands an emboldened IRGC ample opportunities to strike U.S. forces and drag America back into war on Iran’s terms. The global fallout only increases the pressure on us, not Iran: Beyond the oil and gas crisis, the blockade is now triggering a global fertilizer shortage that will cause major food security crises and potential famines in vulnerable regions. The smarter path is clear: withdraw, declare victory, and use sanctions relief as our negotiating leverage with Iran. This resets the talks on our terms, avoids war, and prevents further escalation of the energy crisis at home and abroad.

@BillMelugin_ How to properly interpret Rep Lieu's statement. Kash Petel and the FBI are starting to get a little too close to the groups supported by us Democrats, we need to stop them before we are in handcuffs

NEW: Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) tells reporters he believes FBI Director Kash Patel is an obstacle on a FISA deal because “many members of Congress do not trust him, based on public reporting, it appears Kash Patel is a raging alcoholic.” Lieu went on to say if Patel were fired, a FISA deal would be much easier, and that Patel could go be a “special agent” for Shield of the Americas.

@EricLDaugh They cannot condemn something they support. Democratic leadership can't speak out against the crazed mob they created without risking that horde turning on them.

@aacohenofficial I agree, it seems that we are stuck reacting to the last attack and not anticipating the next one. It's a worn out cliche but it's time to think outside the box.

This wasn’t a “security failure.” The perimeter held. But we’re still playing defense at the last possible second. The next phase of law enforcement isn’t faster response, it’s early detection. Find them before they move.

Agents did their job. The final layer held. This is a Secret Service leadership failure. Period. With @POTUS Trump, the most targeted political figure in the world, you don’t put him in a semi-controlled hotel. Ever.

A few questions for your consideration 1. How much longer will the ceasefire last? 2. Will Iran cave or will the US resume the strikes. 3. Is President Trump being prudent. 4. Is the President fearful of the consequences of resumption of hostilities.

I hope there is a press conference soon from law enforcement about the shots fired here. Four shots fired. Questions I have: Did the suspect get any shots off before law enforcement engaged? How many shots did law enforcement take at the suspect? Who was not hit.

@BillMelugin_ The outer layers were too thin. Secret Service stopped the threat inside, but relying on “he’s a paying guest” created an obvious gap. When the full line of succession and hundreds of VIPs are in one hotel, the entire building needs tighter internal controls.

@BillMelugin_ Simple fixes could’ve stopped this early: Vet hotel guests during high-threat events (cross-check bookings, ask purpose of stay, length of time in area). Post visible Secret Service or police on floors, stairwells, and elevator not just the ballroom entrance.

My thoughts on the security at the WHCD last night. The first exterior security for me was on the street outside of the hotel. I flashed my ticket and was waved through in one second. My name was not checked against any list, I showed no ID, I was not patted down and did not go through a metal detector. I probably could have shown a ticket from a prior year or a fake one as they barely looked at it. (I don't know who that exterior security was, they were guys in suits). From that point, I walked into the hotel with no further security check, and I walked down to the Fox pre-party where there were multiple ballrooms that were absolutely PACKED with attendees. Still did not go through any security at that point. Hypothetically, If I had hidden an explosive in my shoe or my jacket, I would have had no problem getting into one of those ballrooms. Only once it was time to get into the main ballroom for the dinner did we pass through magnetometers, empty our pockets, and get a pat down. And even that checkpoint was just outside of the dinner room. Two things can be true at the same time. Secret Service reacted quickly to an active armed threat and prevented that threat from getting into the ballroom. But the security leading up to that point, in my opinion, appeared to be lacking severely.

@DavidSMohler @HallDiantha @seanmdav Let's Change the scenario and pretend he is wearing suicide vest, he is layer one of the attack, others disguised as protesters are layer two, maybe a car bomb is layer three. My point is he should have never gotten that close in today's environment

@HallDiantha @seanmdav Oh stop the histrionics. The reason we have multi-layer security is in case one layer fails. The first layer failed. The second layer didn't. The infiltration happened on the Metropolitan PD's watch. The infiltrator was stopped on the Secret Service's watch.

Fire all of Secret Service executive leadership and task Delta operators with overseeing presidential protective detail. Enough is enough. Insane that someone was able to get that far into the building and that close to the president, the line of succession, and a ballroom full of people.
