NCPEDP in partnership with @ShishuSarothi and with the support of @Mphasis F1 Foundation, organised a Regional Consultation on Strengthening Access to Rights for Persons with Disabilities in Northeast at Guwahati. The consultation brought together key stakeholders from Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram, focusing on six critical areas: 1️⃣ Access to Entitlements & UDID Implementation- Challenges in obtaining disability certificates and UDID cards persist, especially in remote areas, due to inaccessible medical assessment centres and limited awareness among authorities. 2️⃣Health Insurance Inclusion- Despite their vulnerability, many remain uninsured due to high premiums and lack of awareness. Arman Ali (@armanaly ), emphasized the need for universal inclusion in Ayushman Bharat, removing age and income restrictions for equitable healthcare access. 3️⃣ Equal Access to Justice- A nationwide study highlighted significant barriers such as attitudinal biases in law enforcement, inaccessible courts, and underfunded legal aid services. Devarnav Sharma (NCPEDP) called for institutionalized legal support, stronger budget allocations, and policy reforms to uphold equal access to justice. 4️⃣ Political Representation & Electoral Inclusion- With the upcoming Assam elections, discussions emphasized the need for increased political participation of persons with disabilities. Akshay Jain (NCPEDP), advocated for reserved seats in governance and stronger awareness campaigns to enhance participation in electoral processes. 5️⃣ State Budget for Disability Welfare- Budget allocations for disability initiatives remain inadequate and non-transparent. Diethono Nakhro (@dnakhr0), former State Commissioner, Nagaland urged governments to ensure financial accountability and increased commitments to disability rights. 6️⃣ Disability Inclusion in the Census- Accurate disability data in the upcoming Census is crucial for effective policy planning and resource allocation. Participants stressed the need for well-trained enumerators and standardized disability identification methods to ensure comprehensive representation.
