A day after NCPEDP marked 30 years, the Capacity Building Workshop for the new cohort of the NCPEDP–Javed Abidi Fellowship on Disability began in Delhi with 16 fellows from across India. Day 1 opened with fellows sharing their journeys, areas of interest, and the work they hope to take forward. @armanaly introduced the Fellowship and spoke about introspection, leadership and sustained engagement in disability advocacy. @as_narayanan reflected on the RPwD Act, Indian Sign Language as an inclusive practice, and Javed Abidi’s contribution to a rights-based disability movement. @PahilajaniSunil spoke on “From Vision to Impact Through Execution”, reflecting on “Nothing About Us, Without Us” as an execution statement. Pradeep Gupta spoke about the diversity of the cohort, representation across states, and leadership rooted in lived experience and community realities. A meaningful interaction between the NCPEDP delegation led by @armanaly and Dr. Manik Gursal, newly appointed as Secretary, @DivyangkalyanMH . The meeting focused on key issues concerning the empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, with the Hon’ble Secretary reaffirming that empowerment will remain a central priority moving forward - a highly encouraging step. Self-enumeration for Census 2027 begins today, 7 May, in Uttar Pradesh. It is already open in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, and the MCD area of Delhi. For the first time, the Census includes an option for self-enumeration ahead of the house-to-house houselisting exercise. We urge persons with disabilities, families, caregivers, organisations, and community networks across these states and areas to use this window to self-enumerate directly. Houselisting and Housing Census field operations will follow after the self-enumeration phase to verify the information shared. Women’s reservation is a long-overdue and important step towards a more representative democracy. It must also open up the conversation on political inclusion for persons with disabilities.
