The proponents of fighter pay (through "wage shares") seem to be worried about whether or not the sponsors of the new venture will earn a return on their capital commitments. Are you not happy that another entity is bidding on fighter services? Do not worry about the investors.

This Luke Thomas video burying Scott Coker caught me off guard. I get "UFC or bust", "old man fighting", and "TKO has a flywheel you don't" arguments. I did not expect how personal some online hatred was towards Scott. Fatalism or learned helplessness? youtu.be/20Jy1KJiXeo?t=…

@loudibella @SIChrisMannix Were you responsible for license fees paid to promoters for bouts where the WBO title was on the line (HBO TV bouts)? Before it was recognized by the other organizations? De La Hoya's early run?

NO. Not. Par for the course and exactly what you would expect. Been criticizing this shit for all 37 years I've been swimming in this filth. This is their totally normal, consistent behavior. Funny how now, with over 40 miserable years in a 4 belt era, people are taking notice. Let's see if the TKO/Zuffa UBO is any better.

If you define elite-level MMA as the fighters in a particular promotion, that is your opinion. If you want to rely on rankings that are biased towards another organization, that is fine, too. Be honest about your evaluation, though. You prefer a particular organization.

What is "elite-level" MMA? Is it a ranked fighter in a particular promotion (UFC)? Undefeated regional fighter evaluates these offers: UFC, PFL, KSW, Rizin, etc. Scenario A: Becomes a UFC champ. Are "they" elite? Scenario B: Ends up as the champ in another organization. Elite?
John S. Nash@heynottheface

More options are good, but it's a stretch to call them competition. I guess you could technically call them competition in MMA, but the UFC controls a specific marketL: elite level MMA. And I don't see the other promoters taking too big of share of that market.

@BrandonACtx @Pound4our4Pound @TheAdrianClark @Gone_in_6ixty One of his fighters got a non-recoupable training expense payment of $20k, recently. Maybe the promoter was able to successfully negotiate a lower purse? Whether you call it a "purse" or training expense, the dollars is what matters, right? Advances are loans, I know.

Some say disclosed pay is what the promoter has to pay shortly after the show and the fighters may give the promoter payment terms on the balance. Others say total remuneration is split between "fighter services" and "other services." Advances are sometimes shown as deductions.
Ariel Helwani@arielhelwani

PSA: The payouts for the Netflix card are not real. And when these numbers come out for the UFC, they usually aren’t real either. Maybe the prelim payouts are accurate, but for the top guys? No chance. There’s the “disclosed payout,” and then there’s the actual agreement behind the scenes. This has always been a thing in MMA.

@fightingwords2 In 2024, they sold nearly 9.8k tickets and had a ~$1M gate. What were the expectations prior to that show? Do you know?

Talked with a longtime sports reporter from here in Norfolk, who's not surprised that the arena isn't sold out. Says this is a market that's both transient and doesn't have a lot of money, but it's also early on for Keyshawn vs. how Pernell Whitaker was regarded long ago.

Interestingly, the WBC is the only sanctioning organization that does not indicate how to obtain their Form 1023. It is available "upon request" by the other organizations. If the sanctioning organizations would issue full sets of financials to the public, that would be helpful.

How did Loeffler/360 Promotions rebuild interest in Bohachuk after he lost to Adams the first time? Why does any promoter, if they still have the rights to the fighter, continue their agreement after a loss? An attorney and former boxing manager's thoughts (archived):

🚨🚨 Zuffa Boxing about to learn this ain't the UFC! Matchmaking is terrible and when it's ok, what do you do when someone loses BAD? How do you build interest in them now? Like Serhii Bohachuk is 31 and lost 2/3 fights (Dominated then a TKO) with the 1 win being a Split-Decision where he looked terrible. Mosley Jr moves on but now what do you do with Boha that you signed?

Zuffa will only get the rights to fighters by offering them the best terms. If the terms end up being uneconomic, which would be the promoter's fault for giving up too much, the entity will not last forever.

You don't get it! Zuffa Boxing is not currently paying "purses." They are making "investments" to "monopolize" boxing! Some time in the future (who knows when), they will offer a pittance for a purse. World domination!!!!1 Pay attention!l1

@heynottheface The revenue is generated by all fighters and all other factors. Any allocation to fighters or factors is arbitrary. Anybody can invoke any arguments they want for "MRP." It does not exist when multiple factors are combined to produce output. The EBITDA is unchanged (in dollars).

@dnbrwnjr This is only true if you think the revenue is not partly generated by specific fighters. ESPN isn't paying UFC-level fees to promote PFL cards under a UFC logo. Also, why would the pure promoter get the EBITDA from revenues collected from licensing outside the event?

The "EBITDA margin" is EBITDA/Sales, the denominator is not an expense (14:40). If the UFC did not pay event costs or collect event revenues—they are paid promotional fees to organize events instead—what would they charge in fees (Q1'26)? What would be the margin for these fees?
John S. Nash@heynottheface

On today’s episode of Hey Not The Face! @CrooklynMMA and I go over the UFC and TKO’s Q1 financial filings, including analyzing their media rights deal, Zuffa Boxing and fighter pay. We also discuss these $1.5 million tickets to the White House.
