@RGS_IBG Thrilled to receive this award from the @RGS_IGB - really on behalf of the whole wildfire community and especially @santin_cristina who co-wrote the key paper leading to it. Incidentally Murchison’s work established the Silurian, when wildfire emerged on Earth.

Despite advances in building standards, fuel reduction methods, fire danger forecasting, communication, evacuation planning and fire suppression in many regions, the recorded death toll from wildfire disasters is on the rise.

@DrTELS Brilliant overview from Tom Smith on this often misunderstood (and misused) seemingly contradicting trends in reduced avg. fire globally (driven vast grassland fires in Africa) and increased fire in areas where fires and their enormous impacts are increasing (many forest areas)

The problem with global burnt area conclusions: Fires in Africa (mostly annual net-zero carbon) are downtrending while fires in boreal forests (Canada this year & Siberia in 19/20) are spiking. 30% of biomass burnt on Earth this year has been from Canada! twitter.com/DrTELS/status/…
Dr Thomas Smith 🔥🌏@DrTELS

@JosephKBennett Grassland/savanna woodland fires dominate global stats. But these are in annual fuels (ie. net-zero carbon). See these plots for Africa & Canada (2023 to date) & global (Jan-Jul) @m_parrington (compare y-axis). Forest carbon will not be replaced if fire frequency increases.

A short thread on why the @WSJOpinion & @BjornLomborg are so wrong to use global burnt area datasets to build a strawman argument. 1) Global burnt area according to 20+ year satellite records is going down, we know that. [🧵🔥1/11]...

Linked natural hazards are documented across the world. WILDFIRES ~WATER &AIR QUALITY ~EROSION.etc This has not been an issue with the UK’s winter and spring fire season. As the fire season extends into summer we will start to see these links bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Had to leave the @Hillsides_Wales conference to assist at a serious wildfire. Tactical burns to stop fire jumping roads and a burn to protect the @ZipWorldUK launch point. Fantastic work by all involved and great support from @marksmyth777 as always 🔥

New @OECD report "Taming Wildfires in the Context of Climate Change" gives an incisive account of what #climate change means for #wildfire risk, and how policies can confront the issue. doi.org/10.1787/dd00c3… Proud to see that our review proved so useful to the report 👇

🔥 Trends and drivers of #fire under #climate change 🔥 THREAD on our #review paper, out today! Climate change is a *push factor* for fire risk globally - on local/regional scales, humans can either *push with* or *pull against* the new challenges. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.102…

@jjestrany many thanks for giving up some your Sunday to explaining your team’s exciting research. Some unexpected findings on erosion and hydrology in this Mallorcean catchment burned in a huge wildfire in 2013 - and is recovering rather well.#swanseageo #firelinks #fireurisk
