Amazon, the company that literally built modern Seattle, is shutting down its Amazon Fresh stores across the city after years of investment and expansion. One of the richest corporations on Earth is walking away from its own backyard with almost no notice.

Neighborhoods losing grocery access.
Empty storefronts spreading.
The mayor had publicly promised that grocery chains “would not be allowed” to abandon communities.
Amazon closed anyway.
This isn’t just about groceries. It’s about what happens when a city makes itself too expensive, too hostile, and too unpredictable for the very businesses that power it.
Amazon didn’t fail Seattle.
Seattle’s leadership failed Seattle.

@skaushik100 That growth is driven by immigration. 2/3 of newcomers are immigrants according to Axios. We are failing our citizens importing bodies who can’t vote but get taxed. Pricing our people who lived here long term as well. Not a good recipe for success.

Seattle has plenty of challenges, but there's fresh evidence that the city is hardly in some sort of disastrous doom loop: we were the fourth fastest growing big city in the country between mid-2024 and mid-2025, albeit at a healthier (as opposed to breakneck) 1.5 percent growth pace.
New York, Chicago and Los Angeles all lost population. Among peer West Coast cities, we grew faster than Portland, faster than San Francisco. And we grew a lot faster than Austin, where (so I hear) nobody ever has to pay any taxes on anything.
Oh, and we grew nearly twice as fast as Bellevue, no doubt another inconvenient truth for the "Seattle Is Dying" cohort on this site. (Which is not tho say that Seattle doesn't have a Bellevue problem - I caught wind recently of a couple of other companies saying privately they're moving some jobs across the lake -- but it's hardly at the scale some people want to make it out to be, at least not yet).
