From Solo Cups to Ballon Knots - How Police Failed One of Their Own “There’s a man passed out in the snow.” The 911 call in the pre-dawn hours of January 29, 2022 was non-descript. It could have been anyone. But within minutes of arriving on scene, first responders realized the “man,” severely injured and barely alive on the lawn of 34 Fairview Road in the middle of a blizzard, wasn’t just anyone. He was one of their own. Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, a well-known and beloved figure in the community, had nearly 20 years on the force. And while in theory, law enforcement is supposed to treat every case they work with the same level of professionalism, the reality is, they pull out all the stops for a brother in blue. In fact, just hours before O’Keefe would ultimately be pronounced dead, several police officers involved in this case – either working or as witnesses – returned from New York City, where they travelled to pay their respects to two officers killed in the line of duty. None of them personally knew Jason Rivera or Wilber Mora, but they all knew O’Keefe. Besides being a Boston cop, O’Keefe garnered admiration from the people in his town for taking in his young niece and nephew, essentially becoming a single dad, after the deaths of his sister and brother-in-law. Yet on that cold, snowy morning in early 2022, nearly every police officer from every agency that touched this case, not only failed to follow even the most basic and standard protocols, they turned the investigation of an honorable officer and human's death into a national embarrassment.
