@HaroldJ_NEPA @GreatDismal I still feel kinda bad that I asked @GreatDismal to sign Johnny Mnemonic (in Best of OMNI Science Fiction No.6) when everyone else was lined up with gleaming new copies of Virtual Light

English

@GreatDismal I remember the day my OMNI subscription arrived with this story in it. I devoured it several times that week and returned to it many times after.
This short story predates Neuromancer by several years. Was this the very first cyberpunk story ever?

9. Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
Critics scoffed at Reeves’s portrayal of a mnemonic courier who has 24 hours to download 320GB of data from his brain before his head explodes. But practical effects, a cult cast and a prescient scenario co-scripted by the cyberpunk guru William Gibson make this grungy sci-fi more fun than you might remember. Reeves’ “I want some room service!” monologue is one for the ages.

"Most concerning is the illusion that LLMs are retrieving information rather than constructing word associations. LLM responses are statistically likely rather than factually accurate. Sometimes these things correspond, but often they do not." E. Salvaggio techpolicy.press/challenging-th…

It's a terribly neat illustration of Wilhoit's law, "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect":

@waq_r .... especially since those machines cannot get ram upgrades. It's soldered on; that's it forever.

@MarioHachemer @GergelyOrosz Agree, but also as a working SWE in any field, real "mastery" is usually tied to long&deep work in the specific domains/ industry/ constraints that come from a specific customer base or deployment env. That last 10% of the ladder will be different between companies
English

I'm not sure I agree then on timelines. Becoming proficient in *integrating* LLMs is something you can pick up in a couple of weekends, maybe two weeks if you want to learn about the basic theory behind them.
But that's a far cry from being able to work on them as you would in a position that does more than use LLMs. Creating your own task specific finetunes f.e. is something that is easy to do, but *hard* to master, which is tough if you have to fund that work yourself.

@odbol @FreyaHolmer Yup. Just name a file ***.ipynb and open it. Open it, run it, things install, and you can run the cells.

jupyter notebook is one of the most user-unfriendly things I've run
launch through cmd, it opens a file with a url, copy/paste that into your browser, then there's a 50% chance it will load, and an 80% chance the python kernels stop working after a minute (??)

Software developers could learn one thing from data scientists: Start using Jupyter Notebooks. Your life will never be the same.
