@jcaetanoleite @NathanJRobinson @DKThomp Bro why don’t you just engage with some arguments? Like, who cares - N-Robs is pointing out to the abundance idiot that he’s not just some YouTuber. He’s rebutting an anti-appeal-to-authority. If you want to discredit the guy, argue with his points

I'm glad that the author of "Rent Control Is Fine, Actually" calls themself Unlearning Economics, bc it's good to just state things clearly, such as the open animosity that many left economic populists have for the field of economics and economists themselves. Economists aren't gods, and economics isn't a divine truth, but economists are good--better than most--at something critical for making public policy: They're good at identifying tradeoffs. "Rents are too high, so freeze them" is compelling politics. But in the absence of other pro-supply policies, if you make it illegal to increase rents, landlords will stop upgrading units and convert them to condos, which reduces the supply of units for rent, reduces mobility, and drives up rents for everybody else. The left econ populists have some clear, and clearly stated, policy ideas: - Rents are too high, so freeze them. - Electricity is expensive, so stop rate increases. - Homes are too expensive, so ban institutional investors. - Power prices are rising, so ban data center construction. ... All these policies feel like solutions because they're brisk, they name enemies, and they take on the most visible source of frustration. But they are much better as villain-naming exercises than they are as a complete public policy. On their own, each creates other problems: less housing built, less clean electricity built, abdicating energy policy by encouraging AI firms to build data centers abroad in unsavory countries with more emissions, etc. I can't think of a single economic populist idea that wouldn't be helped with a little dose of economics, which is why it's troubling when I see the left participating in, and even celebrating, the great unlearning of economics.

@jcaetanoleite @NathanJRobinson @DKThomp The first thing you would see if you even bothered to google him - "Dr Cahal Moran is a Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He received his PhD in economics from the University Manchester on the subject of prospect theory."

Armed police would shoot the terrorist dead. These police officers put their own lives on the line, saving the man from harming himself, them, and other people. If they had been armed special forces, the guy would be in a morgue now.
Owen Jones@owenjonesjourno

Hold on - what? If police officers think someone might be carrying explosives, protocol is to kick them in the head repeatedly like this? Is that actual police protocol? If so, how is it a wise police protocol? Can someone explain the reasoning?

@owenjonesjourno You guys are beyond ridiculous he tried to murder 2 people and all you want to talk about is how the police acted. Not the fact he tried to murder 2 people because they were Jewish. But yea let's go with police brutality, this whole point is beyond laughable, beyond embarrassing

The Metropolitan Police denouncing a party leader a week before elections - over a retweet. This is outrageous. Forget what you think about the retweet. If you accept this sort of police interference in our democracy, you legitimise a deeply disturbing precedent.

“Apprehending violent and dangerous criminals is a full contact and messy task which may appear shocking to observers with little experience of policing in the real world.” Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley writes to Zack Polanski.

@clarabellabear2 @owenjonesjourno @metpoliceuk No-one is disputing that. Two things to think about. (1) what is your actual plan to resolve the situation? i.e. kick him in the head until...? (2) if it's fine to kick him in the head, is it fine to hit him in the head with a baton? is it fine to shoot him in the head?

@i_spell_good_ @FrankyHansmith @owenjonesjourno @metpoliceuk You do what you can to disarm a terrorist. Easy for you to ask questions later, but if that’s me, I’m not messing about waiting to find out if the taser deployed effectively or the charge has broken off (which happens frequently, especially as the wires are v fragile)

@SaulStaniforth @ZackPolanski @itvnews He already knows Ed Balls presents the show, he already knows that article is all over the news so hes going to be asked about it. SO if he doesn't like it, don't go on the show. Polanski is always about attacking the man rather than simply answering the questions.

@Stsantek @CurtisDaly_ I’d hesitantly suggest that if your response is “sometimes we work late, wtf are we meant to do, not drink?!”, you might have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol

What does on the job mean? Have you ever worked in Parliament? MPs often have to vote late at night on days on end. They are not in the chamber, they are walking around the palace waiting for the bell to summon them to go through the lobbies. Everyone from staffers to journos leave their desks after a certain time (6, 7, 8 or whenever) to do what is equally important, speak to each other. They do it in Parliaments historically socially designated places: the terrace. Where there is a bar. Which doesn’t serve tea. And as all other professions go to the pub after work to bond with their colleagues and nobody suggests they should do that in a barren field with bottles of still water, so MPs and surrounding politicos do as much. And one day there could be enough Green MPs in Parliament to find that both convenient and pleasant. And you know what, sometimes pleasant things can remain so, even if people we don’t like get to enjoy them from time to time.

I often talk to the homeless, & I ask them ‘why don’t you get a job’ They all answer in exactly the same way: ‘There’s no point, I get more money if I claim benefits’ ‘I get given a house, & I earn £150 or even £200 a day begging’ This is no joke. And this is why the streets of London & the U.K are in ruin And why the economy is broken Instead, why don’t we bring back great apprentice schemes, cut the benefits, & start skilling up these people on the streets to do useful work to help their sense of worth, help them earn more money AND help the economy grow What am I missing here?

What is the point of this discussion? No one here has any understanding of why the Greens are surging at all. The Green surge has upset their political assumptions and they’d prefer it just went away. Not good for useful political analysis!

@darrenmiller75 @Ross_Greer @scottishgreens (I’m not an SNP voter but) If the party whose primary policy position is independence for Scotland continues to get elected as the majority party, I’m afraid you have no (democratic) claim against further independence referendums

@mulronie @keewa My oldest half brother (b.1959) routinely complains about kids these days not having the work ethic of his generation. He left a cushy software job in his late 30s (mid 90s), bought a guest house that his wife ran, sold that in 2009, and has not worked in any meaningful way since
