You don’t have to subscribe to this limiting view of masculinity
- It’s OK to experiment with your style (doesn’t make you “gay”)
- Talking about your feelings opens up powers you cannot anticipate — connection, ownership, and deep growth.I wasn’t raised being in touch with emotions. My therapist noticed and introduced me to the Wheel of Emotions, which literally shows you the many different emotions available (men often only know one: anger). This has brought me so much closer to my wife and friends
- You can question what your role is. What if being a “provider” doesn’t mean you have to make more money? What are other ways you might provide for your family? What if you’re not a “provider” at all — who would you be?
- You can be happy, silly, grateful, and love fun. Traditional masculinity shows a grumpy man who’s irritated with his family and complains at Disneyland (“Can’t believe we have to spend all this money”). What if you chose to be a goofy loving person who your family enjoyed being around? What if you LOVED being around people instead of saying “I hate people” and building a man cave to isolate yourself in? You can choose your character. Society doesn’t own you.
In the same way you’d train your body, train to stretch your own definition of masculinity, which is vastly more complex than what Online Bros might suggest

Dana White explains why he hates men's mental health culture "I hate this whole men's mental health stuff that they talk about. Unfortunately, when you're a man, you are the provider, you can't be that guy posting on social media, oh I had a bad day and I'm so sad" "It's unattractive to other males, let alone women"

@hankgreen can you talk more about parenting? I like how you prompt your son to be curious, even from a young age.
