Continuing our Aadi Velli worship of Maa, here are some beautiful lines from Ilango Adigal’s Silappadhikaram: The verse describes the Goddess performing the “Marakkaal Aadal”, a dance on wooden stilts, while vanquishing the deceitful, sword-wielding demons. Kalladam, another classical Tamil text, also refers to the same tradition: மரக்காலாடி அரக்கர்க் கொன்ற கவைத்தலை மணிவேல் பிறைத்தலைக் கன்னி வடபால் பரிந்த பலிமணக் கோட்டம் Marakkaal Aadal was one of the traditional dance forms known in Tamilakam and was performed during temple festivals. The video beautifully brings to life this fierce and majestic dance of the Goddess.

According to Tamil tradition, Murugan taught Tamil grammar to Agastya, who then composed the grammatical treatise Agathiyam, regarded as the earliest Tamil grammar. A similar tradition exists in Sanskrit. When a Satavahana king asked his minister Śarvavarman to simplify Sanskrit grammar and produce a concise grammatical text within a short period, Śarvavarman worshipped Lord Murugan. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord appeared before him and revealed a simplified system of grammatical sūtras. Thus was born the celebrated Sanskrit grammatical work Kātantra Vyākaraṇa (कातन्त्रव्याकरणम्). Since the opening sūtra revealed by the deity began with the words “Siddho varṇasamāmnāyaḥ”, the grammatical tradition also came to be known as Kaumāra Vyākaraṇa (derived from Kumāra) and Kalāpa Vyākaraṇa, the latter traditionally associated with the plumage (kalāpa) of Kārttikeya’s peacock mount. Interestingly, several scholars have noted striking similarities between the Tamil grammar Tolkāppiyam and the Kātantra system. They begin with the classification of sounds (letters), proceed systematically to word formation and morphology, and present grammatical rules in a manner intended for learners. They concluded that both belong to the ancient Aindiram grammatical tradition. Significantly, the Pāyiram of Tolkāppiyam itself describes its author as “ஐந்திரம் நிறைந்த தொல்காப்பியன்” (Tolkāppiyar, who was well versed in Aindiram). Hence it is clear that Murugan is celebrated as the guardian of both Tamil and Sanskrit. This shared legacy is a powerful reminder that India’s languages are threads of a single civilizational fabric, woven together by a common spiritual and intellectual heritage.

Every year during the Soora Samharam festival at Tirupparankundram, Sanskrit slokas describing the events are recited, followed by their explanations in Tamil. Thousands of devotees from the surrounding villages listen with deep bhakti, seeing no divide between Sanskrit and Tamil. To them, both are sacred languages. Only Tamil zealots have a problem with this and no one cares about them anymore.

Today is Ani Thirumanjanam, the second most important festival dedicated to Nataraja after Margazhi Arudra Darshanam. It is celebrated when Sun transits through Mithuna Rasi, which houses Ardra star and when moon is at the star of Sun, Uttharaphalguni. Pictured here is one of the celebrated Nataraja bronzes of the Thanjavur Brihadisvara Temple. This magnificent vigraha was gifted by Queen Cholamadevi, one of the queens of Rajaraja Chola I. Remarkably, the inscription recording the donation provides precise iconographic details of the image. It states that the total height of the deity, including Apasmara, measures “mukkālē araikkāl muḻam.” The inscription further notes that the image bears “Ganga Bhattaraki” on the head and is adorned with nine flowing jatas. It also records that Nataraja stands upon a lotus pedestal embellished with “Ratnanyasa” — the ritual embedding of precious gems.

'Nail biting' is prohibited in the sastras. But this truly was a nail bitingcontest! Watch this clip of 25 participants (who cleared round 1) participating in round 2 of Swami Vedanta Desika's 'raghuvEragadyAvadhAnam' ❤️ What is so special about this round? This was Round 5 in the contest, the toughest of all. Eg: The jury member will utter a word from the middle of any passage (chUrnikA) say पुण्डरीक. The contestant can take a maximum of 7 seconds to think. He/She must NOT answer like this: चण्ड-कर किरण-मण्डल बोधित पुण्डरीक वन रुचि लुण्टाक लोचन RATHER this way: चण्डकर (1) लोचन (8) किरण (2) लुण्टाक (7) मण्डल (3) वनरुचि (6) बोधित (4) पुण्डरीक(5). So the contestant has to run the words L->R & R->L in turns. And guess what? MANY answered this round too! This is the biggest gift to Swami Vedanta Desika from the students! This contest was about memory, retention and delivery! Well, there was a tie-breaker quiz too! Parents & Grandparents must watch this ENTIRE video on my Youtube channel!

@ARanganathan72 We should seriously investigate how it was build rather than parroting the ramp idea. Building a ramp with the required incline and strength would end up being a bigger engineering project than the temple itself.

Comparisons are futile but for me one of India's greatest engineering achievements remains the 217 feet tall shadowless Brihadisvara Temple built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010. Crafted with giant interlocked stones and crowned by an 81 ton kumbam, it was built within six years.

Two Thirukkurals are enough to debunk the modern theory that the Thirukkural is an “Ulaga Pothumarai”, a secular or religion-neutral text. பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார் இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார் Those who reach the divine feet of the God cross the vast ocean of births; those who do not, cannot cross it. வகுத்தான் வகுத்த வகையல்லால் கோடி தொகுத்தார்க்கும் துய்த்தல் அரிது Even if one amasses wealth in crores, one cannot truly enjoy it except in the manner ordained by the One who has allotted destiny. The idea here is unmistakable. Valluvar speaks of birth and rebirth, the divine feet of God, and destiny ordained by the Creator (through Karma). These arise from the philosophical soil of Sanatana Dharma. No other religion supports this philosophy!

This 4,500-year-old terracotta dice from the Indus-Saraswati Civilization is a powerful reminder of India’s living heritage. Dicing is also mentioned as a popular game in Rig and Atharva Vedas (two of the four sacred Vedic scriptures). From symbols and craftsmanship to rituals, yogic practices, and collective memory, numerous elements of ancient Indian civilization continue to thrive in the daily social and religious life of Indian society across regions and communities. Civilizational inheritance is not just about geography or ruins, it is defined by living customs, symbols, rituals, and unbroken cultural consciousness. India is the enduring living continuity of the Indus-Saraswati Civilization. #IndusSaraswatiCivilization #AncientIndianHeritage

One of the most powerful symbols of India’s unbroken civilizational continuity! Discovered at Mohenjo-daro in undivided India this steatite seal, about 4,300-year-old, shows a seated figure in yogic posture (widely seen as Shiva-Pashupati) seated in Mulabandhasana, surrounded by animals. While ancient sites may lie across modern borders, India remains the living custodian of this heritage. The yogic posture, Shaivite symbolism, and spiritual ethos seen in the Pashupati Seal continue to thrive in India’s temples, daily worship of Shiva, yogic traditions, and cultural life even today. From the Vedic period to contemporary Bharat, this civilizational thread has remained alive and unbroken — deeply embedded in our philosophy, rituals, and collective consciousness.🇮🇳 #PashupatiSeal #IndusSaraswatiCivilization #LivingIndianHeritage

The locals fondly call Thirupparankundram Murugan as “Tharaasukkaran” (one with the balance) and the place as Tharaasukkaran Bhoomi. The name is deeply symbolic—here, Lord Murugan is believed to dispense grace and deliver justice with perfect balance, granting—or withholding—exactly what is due, to the right person, at the right time. There is a unique sculpture of Murugan in the temple chariot displaying this iconography. It serves as a powerful reminder that in this sacred kshetra, justice is not only assured—but delivered with flawless precision. ..and it happened.
