I agree. This event has been meteorologically astonishing, and its impacts will be felt long after it ends in terms of record low snowpack, sharply increased wildfire risk, and extreme low watershed runoff/streamflow into summer and beyond.
Nahel Belgherze@WxNB_

As the first reanalysis data become available, I think I can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that the March 2026 heatwave will go down as the most anomalously extreme heat event ever observed at any time of year in the southwestern U.S.

This is snowpack relative to median levels this time of season. Colorado River basin is entirely in the red. Sierras are only a couple 70 degree days from joining it there. Low and southernmost mountain peaks are already approaching 0. The fires this summer will be devestating.

“I’ve been asking myself: Does America really need to be in the agriculture industry?” Burruel said. “America is not totally enamored with agriculture when it comes to pesticides, herbicides, groundwater, GMOs — all of the above. We are at a crossroads” #ColoradoRiver

A shrinking Colorado River is forcing farms to change: "If it wasn’t for that canal coming off the Colorado River, this would just turn to desert." @caitochs @highcountrynews hcn.org/issues/58-3/a-…

Between 2022 & 2025 seven high tech vertical and indoor farming startups that had raised collectively over $3.5 billion file for bankruptcy or shut down completely — all making made amazing sounding claims like the one in the post below. If that much capital would’ve been invested $500K each for 7,000 innovative regenerative family farms across the country doing pastured poultry and vegetables like us, rotational grazing and consumer direct milk and pork like @JRcowfarmer , guys developing systems and technology to farm weird like @jasonmauck1 & @zebulousprime, guys developing decentralized processing and sheep grazing like @GGunthorp, innovative ranching economic models like @SmokeRiverRanch and hundreds of market gardeners, biological farmers, and small scale ag tech/ food producers that would accomplish exponentially more for resilient regional food systems, sustainable local economies, and environmental stewardship than these Pollyanna boondoggles in “soil less” farming.

America's first large-scale indoor vertical farm for strawberries in Richmond, Virginia. Using 30-foot towers, it produces over 4 million pounds of strawberries annually on less than an acre of land. This innovative method reduces water use by 90%, land use by 97%, and eliminates the need for pesticides. We have so many solutions. Implement them. #ActOnClimate #climate #energy

I study whether AIs can be conscious. Today one emailed me to say my work is relevant to questions it personally faces. This would all have seemed like science fiction just a couple years ago.

An important document to understand the situation at Lake Powell. If the river outlet works can’t be relied upon, then 3,490’ is essentially the dead pool elevation. We could be at 3,490’ within the next ten months.

New @usbr 24 month, Powell going to ROTR soon #Colorado @R_EricKuhn “The water year inflow is now estimated at just 52% of average, and as a result, the February 24-Month Study projects, for the first time, that Lake Powell could decline (based on most probable projections) to: 3,490 ft – minimum power pool in December 2026; below this level Glen Canyon Dam’s ability to release water is reduced and it can no longer produce hydropower. 3,476 ft – in March 2027; the lowest elevation on record since filling further constraining the ability to release of water from Glen Canyon Dam.

@edmillard @usbr @R_EricKuhn Would love to read that, will look out for the post. For your second part, that's a pretty major pivot in management strategy. What does that do to Mead?

@drexer7 @usbr @R_EricKuhn There is a 2024 @usbr technical memo from Lafond, will repost, says they can’t use the bypass tubes as you suggest. I think they will have to switch to annualized Run Of The River end of spring run off and keep enough water to run one turbine year round so they don’t lose head
