Why Is Art Important? Depends on who you ask, but I'd venture to say it is because the work is capable of moving us politically, emotionally, aesthetically, conceptually, historically, and very present in the NFT space, financially. So, art is a multifaceted thing that can't be trapped into being valuable because of one particular thing. That is actually a great thing because it keeps art and all its participants on their toes. And why is that good? Because art is about taking risks, thinking differently about the world, and maybe, just maybe, it can change who we are. So what do we do with that? How do we incorporate this malleable value system into our NFT space? We start, each one on their own, building clearer value systems of what you consider art and build a community around those ideas. Now, to build a community with a set of specific values you need to understand that there are other ways to consider art valuable for different reasons. So if we build these niches and deny what is around us, well, then we are doing it all wrong. We are trying to go against art by trying to fix it into ONE value system and that is just not what art is about. There is no one genre of art. There is no one period of art. There is historical art, and there is contemporary art, and in each, there is an infinite range of works, practices, and communities. Diversity, uncertainty, multiplicity, and vulnerability are the name of the game when thinking of art. This applies to when you do it, buy it, and/or distribute it. When we think of the NFT space, we have just seen marketplaces spitting out 1/1s and 1/1/x collections, but we have yet to explore curatorial "programs" with defined and sharable values. We had a great opportunity with AB and we are here greatly because of them. But even in such a booming space like generative art, I never could grasp the ideas being explored and how one body of work led to a progression of the medium in one way or another. Generative art has many genres, and as such, how do we build a program that evolves such genres in order to build a timeline of how one thing led to another and how one project can redefine one idea over those that came before? We need to stop going in circles and aim for something. After four years in the NFT space, I see a tremendous opportunity for artists, platforms, and collectors to start questioning and building for the future. We need to move beyond the repetitive and purely financial aspects (which we need!) and focus on creating a space that is diverse, critical, and experimental for an evolution of artistic practices, both in terms of collecting and producing it. This will not only solidify what is being produced, distributed, and sold but also propel us forward toward something greater; a community that is mature enough to ask, why and how is what we supporting worthy of that support? The NFT space is one of the most exciting things to happen to the art world in years. I hope we all can protect it and build it into that groundbreaking place we all say it is, but this time for real.
