Uber is now very clearly targeting Waymo/pure AV-networks and claiming that a hybrid approach is needed for autonomy Some interesting points - AV-only networks (not mentioned but clearly this is Waymo) in SF/LA have already hurt driver utilization and hourly earnings - “In California, one AV does the work of about four drivers.” - "Recent fleet-wide outages in San Francisco and Wuhan highlighted how AVs can be challenged by sudden disruptions" Pretty convenient that a lot of the “responsible transition” framing also conveniently protects Uber’s marketplace role axios.com/2026/05/08/ube…

At @Uber, we believe deeply in the potential of AVs to create safer roads, lower emissions, and (over time) lower costs Realizing that potential requires more than technology - it requires getting the transition right To that end, we’re releasing a report on what we think “getting it right” looks like: — Being clear-eyed about the impact on workers — Ensuring AVs operate in underserved areas as they scale — Bringing cities & communities along for the ride

Zoox gets stuck, Tesla FSD Assists: Yesterday I was driving to the Cosmopolitan on the Las Vegas Strip where I came across an indecisive Zoox that had to reverse to fix its mistake. Tesla FSD v14.3.2 came & helped out by backing up automatically to give it room Great clip 🙂

@Waymo faces calls to pause its London robotaxi trial. The local Green Party for Brent has launched a petition to halt Waymo’s testing programme in London after a vehicle drove through a live police cordon in Harlesden. #ZagConnected Read more: zagdaily.com/connected/call…

Street racing at 125+ mph on the I-10 in LA led to a crash, but the Waymo Driver saw it coming: it detected the anomalous situation early, tracked the reckless vehicle post-crash, and maneuvered defensively to safely bypass the scene.

This isn't controversial. The real question is whether tesla can get to waymo levels of safety and scale. Because if they do, they have huge advantages from their vertical integration. Tesla has the super charging network and the ability to produce 5k cars a day. Waymos entire fleet is only 3k cars and has been the limiting factor to their growth.

.@a16z's @aleximm says Waymo is "significantly ahead" compared to Tesla FSD when it comes to safety: "We love Elon." "Critics would say that LiDAR provides more data and has better performance in adverse weather like fog, snow, rain." "We believe the Waymo approach today is clearly safer." " That said—if you look at FSD, and the publicly available data, they have shown significant improvement. The slope is promising."
