@goatofkc @spymak7 “Those who cause problems don’t give a damn” that is arguing a zero sum game. Are there other options to promote road safety? 100%. @DDOTDC has shown limited interest in serious road design safety measurements. Removing one of the few that do will make DC more dangerous.

If this passes, we can expect that the fatality rate on DC streets to skyrocket, ignoring all the other direct and indirect consequences of this proposed bill.
Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle

This morning the House Oversight Committee is expected to advance a bill that would ban D.C. from using traffic cameras or stopping drivers from making right turns at red lights. Twelve of the D.C. Council's 13 members and @MayorBowser have made statements opposing the move.

@spymak7 @goatofkc Why continue to play the zero-sum game? It’s disingenuous and grounds the driver’s desire to murder pedestrians/cyclists with impunity. Logical placement of safety devices, be it cameras or chicanes or roundabouts, etc, go for it. If fines can be avoided for safety. I’m game.

@drivers_of_DMV @goatofkc Then put the cameras where they matter. Where speeding is prevalent or led to a fatality, but the problem is they only lower speed for a short period of time. Even if you automated every block it still would not change those who don’t care about their speed to begin with…

@drivers_of_DMV If DC residents are isolated on this poll, and the vast majority still support removal, will you accept democracy?

Two weeks of this blackout-curtain van parked on a NW DC street and it somehow just lives here now, quietly collecting tickets and getting creepier by the day. @311DCgov

@spymak7 Yes, smart road design can make huge differences and should absolutely be implemented. Daylighting and roundabouts as used in Hoboken, NJ and Carmel, IN make 100% sense and work.

@drivers_of_DMV I don’t think you’ll see a lack of camera enforcement increase fatalities Bad driving behaviors aren’t changed by automated tickets but other issues. Safer streets start with good engineering and traffic safety systems (bike lanes, lights, crosswalks, etc)

@NoCyclopathTO A driver who sees any poor driving standard as completely acceptable and everyone’s problem but the driver’s.

Every single day, it’s drivers, NOT CYCLISTS, who are quietly saving lives. Thousands of near misses don’t turn fatal because drivers are trained, alert, and defensive in their driving. Cyclists? No mandatory training, no accountability. Just pure amateur fuckery.

@kristenmag @NYCMayor I've been saying we should raise it to at least 40mph to weed out the kids who aren't smart enough to look both ways. Survival of the fittest baby.

We're implementing the largest expansion of Sammy’s Law in city history: lowering speed limits to 15 MPH at every eligible school by the end of our first term. And we’re not waiting to get started. This year, we’re lowering speed limits at 800 additional locations to 15 MPH, bringing the citywide total for School Slow Zones to nearly 1,300 by the close of 2026. New York City’s streets should be the safest in the world - especially for kids - and City Hall is using every tool at our disposal to make that a reality as quickly as possible.
