Langurs used to have good gazetted central government jobs with pensions to scare away the monkeys that infest sarkari Delhi. Sad to see them fall prey to neoliberalism and be replaced by cardboard cutouts. Shastri Bhawan/Central Secretariat Library.

My son's logic: 8-0 is "eighty", 9-0 is "ninety", so 1-0-0 is "onetyty". I told him as per his logic it should have been "tenty". And, 1-0 should be "onety". (Of course, we told him the correct things.)

@aditya_mani_jha No. Pet owners are exclusively responsible for pets and don't get to shift blame/responsibility onto victims. Me&my kid have been savagely attacked walking the streets minding our own business. We also play with dogs and would love one.But yes, "dangerous breeds" is shaky science.

@danishjmk A fragmented banking system which is unable to collaborate (rather than privacy concerns) is the key reason for primitive payment systems in the US-the US as well as countries with stronger privacy laws than the US are indeed trying hard to create UPI-adjacent systems.

@danishjmk Not detracting from your larger point but payment systems in the west are positively primitive.

#CJIDYChandrachud this is exactly the witch hunt the supreme court has put them into. Why?? If at all an intervention was required into the due process, it should have been done in a sealed cover process. Now you have thrown the corporates to the vultures. These are the same companies generating jobs, revenues and avenues for our country. Just because they are successful doesn't mean we put them under the truck for our political agenda

Would like to clarify that Biocon did not make any political donation to JDS or any other party for elections. At a personal level I purchased electoral bonds which I donated to JDS & several parties. My donations were nominal on the principle of funding election campaigns with white money.

Election spin aside, the Indian data seems broadly in line with the global trend-a fall in inequality in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century followed by a rise. An explanation of the Indian context would be useful as would (given election spin!) some granularity for recent years.

India's elections are set for next month amidst soaring inequality. According to our latest paper, the top 1% income and wealth have reached their highest levels on record. Welcome to the Billionaire Raj.

Long ago, the Delhi Development Authority actually employed a philatelist, who held the title "The Collector of Stamps". And then neoliberalism happened.

@DavidVeevers1 Sure, but don't the super-rich in many other countries also hold wealth in the Cayman Islands (asking)? The exclusive focus on the 1% is often misplaced I think. Perhaps top 20%? Or would that make too many here uncomfortable? Or Gini coefficient, on which the UK does terribly.

After speaking on her phone all day, a super-kind librarian at a seldom-used ministry library ended the call with a proud "I must hang up now. Someone from Harvard is doing research here." Five minutes passed. Then she asked me "You are from Harvard no?" I held my silence.😁
