Our first robot-assisted hysterectomy has been performed by a team led by Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Mr Ahmed El Gohari. This innovative surgery is less invasive, leads to less pain after the operation & can mean faster recovery. Read more: ow.ly/GRA950Wxfgm

MBRRACE has published its perinatal mortality data for 2023. This includes stillbirths & neonatal deaths, broken down by NHS Trust/health board. And with a backdrop of national failure, unsafe care, and avoidable deaths, one Trust stands out - Leeds. timms.le.ac.uk/mbrrace-uk-per…

📢 Maternity Care: A Balanced Conversation for Safer Births 🏥 The recent media reports on maternity failures are heartbreaking; every loss is one too many. These incidents must be investigated, and we must learn from them. However, the constant negative portrayal of maternity services does not tell the full story. Maternity is one of the only specialties that must be available 24/7, 365 days a year, requiring an extraordinary level of expertise, empathy, and resilience from those working in it. Everything is demanded of our midwives and doctors, often at great personal cost to their health. And yet, they show up every day to provide the best possible care. This is why working conditions must be continuously improved—not just for safer births, but also for the wellbeing of the professionals who dedicate their lives to maternity care. Through the Maternity Safety Ambition project, which I support as VP of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), we are working on constructive, evidence-based solutions to improve safety without demoralising the workforce. 🔹 We must learn from mistakes, but also highlight success 🔹We must support our workforce, not just scrutinise them 🔹We must drive improvement, not just assign blame A maternity service that is safe, sustainable, and supportive is possible, but we need a more balanced conversation to achieve it. Let's ensure mothers, babies, and healthcare workers all get the care and support they deserve. 💙 #MaternityCare #SaferBirths #SupportMidwives #MaternityExcellence #MaternitySafetyAmbition #AsmaKhalil

Charlotte's Battle Against Glioblastoma (BAG)
Charlotte, my daughter, passed from a brain tumour five days after her 19th birthday. She was diagnosed in July 2013 with a grade three anaplastic astrocytoma. She endured gruelling radio and chemotherapy. In July 2015, the tumour mutated to a deadly grade four glioblastoma, for which there is no cure. Charlotte, like so many others, never stood a chance with the type of cancer she had. I'm raising awareness and funding in her name so she never becomes 'just another statistic'. charlottesbag.com I now have cancer myself. However, my prognosis is a lot better than Charlotte's. Here's a timeline of recent events: 9.4.24: I was called for a routine mammogram. 13.4.24: I received a recall letter indicating something unusual. 18.4.24: Another mammogram, an ultrasound and a biopsy - the growth is suspicious but very small and considered manageable. No spread to the lymph nodes. 1.5.24 Biopsy results: 14mm carcinoma ER (Oestrogen Receptive). 11.6.24: I had my pre-op assessment. 14.6.24: I had a lumpectomy with lymph node biopsy. 12.7.24: I received the results of the lumpectomy: a 13mm carcinoma with no spread to the lymph nodes was excised. 5.8.24: I went to the Royal Marsden (where Charlotte received all her radiotherapy) to have a CT scan and mapping. 9.8.24: Exactly four months after the first routine mammogram took place, I am told I must take medication for the next five years to lower my oestrogen levels. Oestrogen stimulates some breast cancers to grow. At the end of the month, I will receive five days of radiotherapy. I was fortunate that my cancer was caught early. If you are called for a mammogram, then please go. These are provided free by the NHS from ages 50 - 71. You will be called every three years. I won't be raising funds for this cancer as, fortunately, it is incredibly well funded. I will. however, raise awareness of the importance of attending mammogram appointments. I have lost my daughter to cancer but I still have my son. I owe it to him to be here for as long as possible. I know both of my children would never have forgiven me for not taking up something that's free. Please RT with thanks

Testosterone is not an “essential” hormone for women. Misinformation in the media risks medicalising a normal life stage. Testosterone is only indicated for low libido in postmenopausal women & doesn’t support claims that it helps other menopause symptoms, bone loss or dementia.>
