Even if RN wins in France, France is not leaving the EU and the main European integration agenda will continue. It will likely become a repeat of Meloni: attacking Brussels on national television, while supporting deeper European coordination in Brussels when economic and strategic reality demands it. France sends around 53–54% of its goods exports to the EU. Leaving the single market would mean damaging its own industrial base. The core European agenda is no longer ideological. It is economic necessity: → Capital Markets Union → A single regulatory framework for companies → Energy sovereignty through nuclear, renewables, grids and storage → A more independent European defence system → Joint procurement and a stronger European defence industryRN may change the tone. But Europe’s problem is still fragmentation. And fragmentation is exactly why Europe needs deeper integration, not less.

“I would expect the president to apply pressure” on China over Iran when he goes to Beijing, a US official told reporters in a briefing. That will not be easy. Trump will in effect have to ask Xi for help, which a) is a sign of weakness, b) will come at a cost, what will US have to give for that help, and c) what if China says “no.” Then Trump summit be another casualty of the war. ft.com/content/09c917… via @ft
