Well, that was a first. I was on GB News talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion protocols helping us ensure that people are not discriminated against because of their age, disability, race, or gender. When the presenter ran out of arguments, he dismissed the conversation with a sarcastic "Kumbaya," intending it as a put-down. For the record, "Kumbaya" is not just a throwaway phrase. It's a song lyric derived from the Gullah expression "Come by here," and it's rooted in the African American spiritual tradition. The song is a plea for God's help in times of struggle. It gained wider recognition during the American folk revival of the 1950s and 60s. So no, it's not a punchline—it's a prayer, one I am happy to pray.
