The Irish Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship scheme is now open research.ie/funding/goipg/… and I'm happy to hear from interested PhD candidates. Worldwide applications are accepted but EU/EEA/UK citizens/residents are particularly encouraged to apply.

@mattd_t I think all commercial stuff has about 1% THF, sometimes labelled, sometimes not. Probably make it yourself is the only option to be sure.

Anyone got any tips for getting thf-free dibutyl magnesium? Got three bottles of it with thf in now 😓

@drtomhooper [PPN]Cl is trivial to clean - it recrystalises beautifully from anhydrous solvents (poor sol. in ethers) That said, I believe that [Bu4N]Cl can be dried by just repeatedly dissolving it in anhydrous iPrOH and removing the solvent under vacuum. (Not tried, just been told)

Can anyone recommed an anhydrous chloride source soluble in polar organic solvents? [NBu4]Cl would be obvious but seems very hard to dry, is [PPN]Cl any better? Are there any other options that might work?

@awhspeed No considered that but yes, probably that would work. I guess we could also make other ones ourselves, dry NEt3 + dry benzylchloride probably would work and we can take straight into the box.

@drtomhooper If you don't mind having a protic counterion, triethylammonium chloride works well. You can make it from a reaction that makes HCl in-situ such as acylation of an alcohol, or silylation of an alcohol, with AcCl or TMSCl respectively.

Can we club together and get the Irish Rugby team a new and upgraded shed? They don't need this distraction before a big quarter final.

It was great to attend @eucomc2023 in Alcala de Henares last week. A fantastic line up of talks with lots of exciting chemistry and great to catch up with some familiar faces too. Thanks to the organisers for a great conference and @RoySocChem for funding my student's trip!

@drtomhooper Just got a Vigor box and you get more for your money than with MBraun. Both good boxes though
