“Some People Need Killing” by Patricia Evangelista offers a harrowing, unflinching look at the rise and terrible traumatic consequences of autocratic populist politics in The Philippines. penguinrandomhouse.com/books/612869/s…

@TransLink What is going on with the timing of the #33 UBC? The schedule has become inconsistent and unreliable in the last 3 weeks for scheduled departures during morning rush hour. Today three buses were bunched up and a huge crowd had to wait for 30 mins.

The absurd “Daddy Cop” comedic pre-title sequence on Season 6 Ep. 02 of “The Rookie” is hilarious.

I’ve always known that Jonathan Franzen is a great fiction writer, but listening to “The End of the End of the Earth: Essays” persuaded me he is an equally entertaining essayist.

Craving stimulation and bored of blowhard podcasts,? ⅘ of podcast listeners listen to seven hours of podcasts a week. That a lot of off-the-cuff banter and advice. How to get more value out of leisure listening? Here’s a strategy enabled me to read more: davidrubeli.com/blog/craving-s…

@Gaugustine Take care! Sometimes one value (being a good parent and supportive partner) can trump another (being an good scholar). What is your most valued scholarly project and how can you keep chipping away at it, however mindlessly? Who can help you shed non-essential tasks at work?

Battling the after-effects of COVID, caring for my 2-year old who is waking at 5am, a tough R&R, and unknowns about my husband's cancer diagnosis. Every day I think "what's something mindless I can work on?" which is really hard in academia. Missing the energy for deep thought.

@derekbruff The term might have migrated over from instructional design in industry (aka learning and development). You are right that we need to be clear about and distinguish roles. I distinguish between course author, content expert, instructor, and faculty member.

What is the function of the teacher in the age of mechanical instruction (...with apologies to Walter Benjamin)?

To a writer of any kind, an editor is like a superpower. Because your brain will hide mistakes from you, over and over. Only a set of fresh eyes can give you feedback on the habits you can't see: 👇

@ervinmalakaj Intriguing. What do you mean by "podcasts as a mode of assessment", Ervin? Will students be creating the audio?

A dilemma: Should we engage with the work of scholars and artists whose reputations have been discredited (e.g. charged with or convicted of a serious violent crime?). Should we overlook personal failure unrelated to the work? Should we address our misgivings?

Listening to Jacob Collier's new album of live piano ballads is like listening to Keith Jarrett interpret standards but with Nina Simone or Kurt Elling scatting at the same time with the audience and droning backing choir periodically interjecting. Co-creative performance art.
