🌀When the sun set last night no storm existed, but this low deepened rapidly overnight and as the sun comes up this morning this is how it looks...

#NZ is sort of in limbo next week... as our record breaking high pressure slowly drifts away to the south-east and a low deepens on the Australian side of the Tasman Sea, bringing severe winter weather there.
For NZ next week: More cloud, some rain/showers, 'milder' northerlies.

Anyone else notice news editors ALWAYS use the word "lash" when severe weather is possible?
That and we're always "bracing" ourselves for it.
Just once it would be amazing to see a normal weather headline in NZ: "Severe weather possible" without the clutching of drama pearls!

🌀⚠️Not yet locked in: Low pressure is expected around #NewZealand just over a week from now (due to anticyclonic high pressure parked over Tasmania, scooping up subantarctic air into NZ).

@drummingnz @MetService @niwa_nz Wonder if Niwa's announced job losses will be at the expense of keeping this new weather forecasting double up. Imagine that - choosing to keep a commercial double up over investing in science.

📽️The Big Picture. A low in the Tasman Sea approaches the West Coast on Friday, weakens, then moves through Cook Strait on Saturday and weakens further.
High pressure approaches NZ by Sunday and should be centred just north of the country - encouraging westerlies into next week.
