Los países en desarrollo tendrán derecho a parte de los beneficios económicos que empresas privadas obtienen gracias a avances tecnológicos basados en sus conocimientos tradicionales y recursos genéticos, como los procedentes de plantas medicinales. Más de 190 naciones acordaron en Suiza un tratado para combatir la biopiratería, tras más de veinte años de negociaciones en el marco de la ONU. Se llama "biopiratería” a la apropiación privada del desarrollo y la investigación de recursos genéticos o de sus correspondientes conocimientos tradicionales. En su mayoría se trata de plantas comestibles y medicinales tradicionales de estas comunidades, cuyos efectos y preparación fueron descubiertos y cultivados por comunidades indígenas que no reciben ningún beneficio.

Bottom line: rich countries pretend to be in favour of fair & open markets, devlopment for all etc. but in practice the way financial markets are organized & regulated leads to an enormous income transfer from global South to global North, year after year & growing over time
