Before I started Meridian, I worked at a startup where I was one of the first hires. We launched the product and almost immediately it started breaking. We had full-on outages that affected every customer we had. For two weeks straight my phone would ring at 5:15am. Every morning it was the same thing. A customer on the other end wanting answers I didn't have yet. I was 23 years old sitting on the edge of my bed trying to explain why the product broke that week. She'd get frustrated. I'd take it. Then we'd go fix it. And then the next Friday I'd be back on the same call explaining a different version of the same problem. That went on for months. Going through that enough times rewired how I react to problems. I stopped getting too high when things went well or too low when things broke. The only question that started to matter was: how do we solve this? That's what I try to bring to the team now. When something breaks, we go straight to what's the next step. Problems are daily. Your reaction to them is the only thing you actually control.
