A key pillar of any healthy longevity plan: Muscle strength. Most people only care about strength once it starts to limit them. Why you should maximise your “strengthspan”, no matter your age: 🧵

Thrilled to share that the second paper of my Ph.D. is now published. We have established moderate and vigorous physical activity intensity cut-points for hips, wrists, thigh and back accelerometers in very old adults. Link: 10.1111/sms.70009

Exercise is medicine: The new global exercise guidelines for healthy longevity in older adults are here. With exercise recommendations to address >14 chronic diseases, adverse outcomes, and geriatric syndromes including: ✅ Falls ✅ Cancer ✅ Dementia ✅ Type 2 diabetes ✅ Depression and anxiety A key focus is the need for personalised exercise prescription and translating the evidence to practice. “The ultimate goal is enhanced quality of life, regardless of age or initial state of fitness or frailty.”

Great Cross Talk in J Physiol: bit.ly/4c62wNb Reduced oxidative capacity of skeletal muscle mitochondria IS/is NOT a fundamental consequence of adult ageing. This knowledge is critical to inform effective interventions to maintain health with ageing.

Exercise boosts brain health with ageing. And new data shows just how long the benefits can last. In older adults aged 65-85, markers of cognitive health linked to memory (hippocampal-dependent spatial learning) were improved for up to 5 years after 6 months of high-intensity treadmill exercise. Impressive work from @miaschaumberg and team! aginganddisease.org/EN/10.14336/AD…
