Let try to explain in more detail. In the Old Testament, circumcision was not a universal precept. It applied only to the People of Israel, and, in fact, Christians (like me) would argue that the precept is now obsolete. Circumcision was designed solely as sign of belonging to the covenant. From that, we can draw two conclusions: (1) because God ask his chosen people to circumcise its males, He must not have considered it a mutilation; and (2) it does nothing to diminish the fact that we are in His image. So, to answer your questions directly: (1) circumcision does not make people acceptable in God’s sight; it merely confirms them as members of the People of Israel; (2) we are definitely created in His image, and circumcision does not diminish that.

Infant male circumcision is MUTILATION! There is NO reason to circumcise a male infant! No religious BULLSHIT excuses either! Foreskin does not fully retract until 6 to 19 years of age. And if a kid has phimosis it does not require a full circumcision.
