@westernexile 2/2 I respect that it's not easy to learn foreign languages but Italian is not impossible especially if you've studied French before or you did Latin at school. But you've got to try - to give up on Italy and go to the US like she said in the article is crazy.

@westernexile Definitely correct about expats, I live in Japan and have Japanese friends and it helps my Japanese and their English. My best non Japanese friend is Mexican as we have the Latin thing in common (Italian mum on my side). I try to avoid other English or Americans 1/2

After a decade in Italy, I learned to quickly tell which 'expats' were not going to last a year. Those who moved there and considered learning its language and respecting its customs to be optional for a fulfilling life always spiralled into frustration and depression. Also, if you move to another country, avoid expat communities like the plague. Meeting other foreigners should only ever be a rare and random occurrence, entirely extra to the friends you have made locally. Otherwise you are simply lingering atop the diving board, and will never reach the water.

This feels less like a failure of Italy and more like a failure of judgment. Moving to a rural part of a foreign country with a young family, praising its beauty, cheap rent, free childcare, warm people, and better quality of life. Then, deciding to leave because bureaucracy was annoying, Catholic culture felt too strong, and learning the language was too hard. That is a confession that you wanted the rewards of another civilization without paying the price of entering it. If you cannot adapt to the language, the customs, or the pace of the place, the problem is not that the country failed you. The problem is that you mistook tourism with better weather for belonging.
