@arakkosuperstar Yeah like its so weird to me people are like u have to accept that as a celebrity u no longer have privacy n need to endure xyz. Like? Based on what reasons? Because it makes u feel better that theres some sort of evident downside to their popularity?

@lenikacruz yeah i think this isnt 'kpop' in the sense of the industrial complex of kpop music nor 'kpop' as in koreans making pop music but 'kpop' as deliberate contemplation of korean as an experience under global scrutiny and korean as in personal musical sensibilities

notice here i did not say “korean roots.” i have a real problem with the complaints that arirang isn’t “korean enough” bc it has “too much english” or not enough korean instrumentation or signifiers or other songwriters. bts doesn’t need to perform koreanness—they ARE korean.
Lenika Cruz@lenikacruz

but it’s also something totally new, perhaps the furthest they’ve ever been from their “kpop” roots, which some will embrace, others will reject, and still others will feel ambivalent or conflicted about. all understandable and valid reactions 3/x

@rianphin I feel like its similar to people saying spotify fucked up peoples ability to discover music. Like mb the gp is addicted to a discover weekly algorithm but the gp was also fine with whatever cycled through the top200 via radio so i dont think niche interests shifted that wildly.

@phendetta Idk if health goth is even like...a subculture in its own right like being a pilates princess is, mostly because i cant fathom like...an "alt" approach to working out. I feel like it was a silly marketing term to relabel techwear/rick owens-adjacent athleisurewear

It’s really worth hammering home the point that Health Goth was the first ‘subculture’ defined entirely as a Look. There were no Health Goth Bands. There still aren’t! Now everything is like this.

@lapislagoons I think it seems pervasive because theres an existential crisis within this class that doesnt warrant marriage to sustain themselves socially, no financial instability to rally against, so theres nothing to really to default fill the vacancy of unexplored self image or purpose

@lapislagoons This is so out of line from me but i think its a lack of successful indulgence in delusional swagger that gets associated with masculinity and if they havent at all found comfort in their gender identity, an unspoken sense of entitlement begets antisocial/codependent behavior.

there's this whole class of young men that I'm not sure has existed before the millennial generation, where they were raised middle or middle upper class, given plenty of opportunities on paper but for whatever reason were not able to harness those opportunities into something to be proud of, they are struggling socially and emotionally, sometimes a good woman will come along and save them from themselves for a short while, as there are now women who are self sufficient enough to give these types of men a chance, but even then that often isn't enough for them to push themselves towards something to be proud of, something that will make them feel like a man, because the existence of a woman who has been able to build something to be proud of makes him feel like less and less of a man, and so they continue on not feeling like a man, I'm not sure why this is suddenly so pervasive in modern society,

I spoke about this with Hayden Dunham in my book, it was a source of great frustration for her, SOPHIE and AG. There was humour in their music for sure but what they put out was always sincere and always came from a genuine love for synthetic sounds and pop music. SOPHIE especially was 100% earnest about her music, the music press just perpetually assumed this mask of irony which wasn’t there… this is dead wrong

@Jessecooksfood I think she sort of crash out in her posts and i dont think her financial calculation about sesame noodles makes sense, but i like to believe shes trying to advocate for meal plans for people who dont have a good mental model for cooking

@Jessecooksfood I like to believe i can understand where shes coming from in that i get overwhelmed looking at recipes even if theyre labelled as easy cos they have too many ingredients, regardless of how familiar it is, but probably its worse if you cant envision their broader applications

@briebriejoy like, my family used to make essentially lo mein with pasta noodles and oyster sauce and its not the same but its like, asian enough and tastes good in its own right. The "asian" sensibility is forefront even if the staples are western this way n ure not following recipes to a T

@briebriejoy If it helps if u want to "asian-ify" ur meals without herbs/spices: oyster sauce, furikake seasoning and lao gan ma (separately) go a long way to make things taste good with low effort. They act as condiments to most meals if theres no existing flavor profile ure going for.

People are dunking on this but he’s right. “Sesame noodles” isn’t the kind of meal you eat everyday for a week or meal prep. At most you’re eating this once a week. And with this approach to grocery shopping, you have to multiply this shopping load by seven to cover a week. The key is finding recipes with mix and match ingredients that aren’t so specific to a meal. If something requires chili peppers or fish sauce or cilantro— I’m not making it. At least not unless it’s an event. If you care about helping people eat well from home, you should advise them about how to prep one ingredient proteins and veggies that taste good with salt/pepper/butter/olive oil.
Tad Vezner@SPnoir

@Scholars_Stage I wanted to make sesame noodles with cucumber last week. Had to buy sesame oil, chili oil, sesame seeds, rice vinegar... let me know if you have these handy in your cupboard. That's not even getting to the main ingredients.

One way you can tell these people do not go to church is that they have no idea what one 67-year-old lady from Redeemer Lutheran can fit in a station wagon. This is a 2/10 on the church potluck scale, not even trying that hard.

had a music prodigy friend. he’d learn complex piano works, people would politely clap, impressed. another kid learned to play popular music - when he did it, people went nuts. this frustrated my friend endlessly. this is kind of an artistic litmus test, what conclusions you draw

@sodawithlove @dhaaruni I think its partially to help you dismantle this idea of pickme-ism. If you already have a hard time hanging out with other women its going to make it harder for you to get over that cognitive hurdle if you can't immediately relate to them.
