@jasonmauck1 My county has a couple very reliable seed/chem salesmen and an extremely personable NRCS agent that all started pushing soil health and cover crops 10 years ago. 90% of farmers in this county no til and cover. 90% the county south of here is full til. Public opinion follows

1 thing that is never talked about with a more conservative ag (no till, cover crops, etc) is the perception of the community and / or landowners. The ones that get it, get it….otherwise there can be a stigma surrounding it. What is your experience?

What makes southern raised calves worth less ? Top price at local markets in TN is generally $0.40-$0.80 less/lb than NE, SD, WY. All natural (GAP/NHTC/VNB) markets meditate that but rarely meet the price of afore mentioned markets. I’m talking pots of no. 1s

@eWillis394 They SE cattlemen I know (or have heard of) with quality end up custom feed their own because they just can’t seem to get it to pay on the feeder side no matter what they do.

@Nebraskero I understand but I’m talking about a pot of steers all born within 45 days and wt variance <200 from ang/hrf/sim X cows. Are multiple loads necessary to peak interest of buyers? Summer calves graze fescue and winter calves graze covers. Both get 10-15lbs ddg/corn

Two things, I think: tradition and quantity. What makes a grass str bring more then a backgrounder str? Mostly tradition. The 6666 started sending cows north during the 10’s drought. They commented they were surprised at the cow culture on the northern plains. Northern cow men put a lot of effort into type, size, uniformity and of course volume.

@thesteerman 1000 miles $5/mile 48000lbs 3% shrink still leaves room. I understand #1 is a looser term down here but good herds in this area do exist and are moving in the right direction. Do current genetics dissuade you from buying southern calves? Genuinely curious. I don’t mean to pry

@eWillis394 Freight and quality. Generally speaking a #1 in the south is not a #1 in the north

We finally upgraded our corral setup after decades of a very poor setup that was dangerous and ineffective. I didn't realize quite how much this would improve working and loading livestock!
