Improving attendance is my number one priority, so I’m glad that there are 380,000 fewer children persistently absent or not attending school than last year. But we know we need to go further. So today, we're taking action to improve attendance. Here's how 👇

Time in the classroom is important and even small moments in a school day make a real difference to children's lives. Increases in persistent absence have been reported as a post-pandemic challenge in schools around the world. 1/5 🧵 Here’s how we're improving school attendance

If only the problem was attendance. If only the real issue was just that children aren’t at school, and so they can’t learn. For then the solution would be so simple. (illustration @_MissingTheMark) 1/

Boy walks into reception late for school. Receptionist says ‘late again!’ Enters building. Passing member of staff says ‘are you late again?’ On his way to class, someone else asks him for a minute. ‘Are you ok?’ They say. Boy confides that he has no bed. 4 children in a 2 bedroom house. Mum has late nights and he gets himself ready. Good to consider how we may greet some children in a morning.

@nforcerrdc @KirstieMAllsopp I feel like you’ve contradicted yourself here, there’s more to life than academics , emotional and mental health are just as important especially in todays world and for that reason alone starting a year later can be in a child’s best interests - thrive not survive

@KirstieMAllsopp Not done me any harm that I can validate, today is my birthday. Youngest in the year by a mile… However always felt out of my league and emotionally behind which does impact my confidence even to this day

Being #Summerborn can negatively impact your education & life chances. Some pupils who arrive at school age just 4 thrive, but some don’t & it’s vital that parents & teachers of Summer born pupils are able to act. 2 of our boys moved down a year, I just wish I done it sooner.

@KirstieMAllsopp TA here, the system is so flawed. It is frustrating that primary schools can agree to take a summer born child late, but the secondary school can refuse to accept them a year late. Each child is different and should be treated accordingly.

@ballater6 @KirstieMAllsopp The gap does close but we want them to thrive not survive, something that should be an attainment for all children, and if the options there for admissions authorities to allow it then why would they fight against it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@KirstieMAllsopp Initially yes they can be at a disadvantage, depending on the school, my daughter was told when visiting a school for her daughter to quote “ a summer born and left handed oh dear” she didn’t choose that school- but luckily the gap closes as they get into teenage years.

@KirstieMAllsopp @LincolnshireCC reception yr , we are left in the position of feeling forced to follow a panels personal opinion that went against 2 headteachers views or home educate her - at least for the moment, not our first choice of education but one that’s in dd’s best interests her mental, social….

@Ria1984 @nannyonamission @RebeccaLeek_ Children don’t have to start school until the term after they turn 5, this is known as compulsory school age, it’s up to the admissions authority if a Summer born delays from starting aged just 4 if they start in reception or miss a year and go in to yr 1! It’s Postcode lottery !

@KirstieMAllsopp you’ve spoken out before about summer borns, would you help us spread the word about this postcode lottery and the seemingly blanket policy in Lincolnshire most of which applied had headteachers approval at their requested school #csareceptionstart #summerborn
Emma Richards@e_e_richards

It seems @LincolnshireCC is failing Lincolnshire #summerborn children that request #csareceptionstarts and in big way in comparison to surrounding areas! @sb_campaign @dianabarran @NickGibbUK @karlmccartney @S_Hammond @RishiSunak @GillianKeegan @educationgovuk

@dianabarran 's 2022 statement said “the large majority of requests for delayed entry to reception are now approved, with almost 9 in 10 approved each year." This is not the case in Lincolnshire, where the council have rejected 95% of applications this year #summerborn
