Why is it that being around mountains feels so great? I was always told that the Plains are Humanity's natural habitat. Yet mountains produce a universal feeling of splendor, much more than the plain.

@pfinanceblogs @financedystop being car dependent and a commuter is a huge expense as well that people are often blind to, so living in those relatively 'cheaper' places in these states also has its costs, in dollar terms, in time terms, in health terms, in relationship terms...

@financedystop $100K is wildly different in the big cities vs the smaller cities and towns in all these states. People need to realize that and choose wisely.

NYC summers hate your weekends. I analyzed 3 years of Central Park rain data to see if the feeling was real. It was. 27 of 38 summer weekends had measurable rain. That’s 71%. Friday was the rainiest day of the week, with rain on 43.6% of summer Fridays. Basically worse than a coin flip for your evening plans. Sunday had the highest rainfall volume of any day, averaging 0.17 inches. It may not rain every Sunday, but when it does, it commits. Thursday was objectively the best day to be outside in NYC: lowest precipitation, clearest skies, least weekend-related misery. The wildest stat: 70.8% of rainy Sundays were preceded by a gross Friday or Saturday. The weekend basically telegraphs its own downfall. I built a full dashboard using NWS Central Park data with every weekend tracked and every raindrop counted:

MAGA man caught on camera texting "Call ICE" at high school graduation—because there are too many "Mexican names." "Man Hispanics everywhere! Every other name is Mexican! We are being overrun!" he writes. "ICE needs to raid this graduation!" The Farmersville High School graduation ceremony was held at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas.

They would see him as American (or a white foreigner/"laowai"), not Chinese. Chinese identity is overwhelmingly ethnic—tied to Han ancestry, appearance, and bloodlines more than birthplace, citizenship, or language fluency. Native Han Chinese make that distinction sharply in practice, even with mixed kids or fluent outsiders. Legal residency doesn't change it. Honest take: no amount of time in China turns a white kid into one of them in their eyes.

The New Columbia Movement
You know this is a move in the right direction when the entire 3rd world and their corporate sponsors, who shill for “foreign talent,” are furiously frothing at the mouth over this change. For years, they spread the crumbling narrative that automatically assumed America doesn’t have enough talent, despite America leading the world throughout the 20th century with drastically lower levels of immigration. It’s time to focus on working for Americans first.
Homeland Security@DHSgov

An alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. The era of abusing our nation’s immigration system is over.

The new White House policy requiring green card applicants to apply from outside the US is a capricious attack on legal immigration. It will hurt families, leave us with fewer doctors, teachers and scientists, and hurt American competitiveness in AI.

If I had to go home to convert my O-1 genius visa into a greencard, it would completely derail my career. Not even worth applying at that point. The process for a greencard is 1 to 2 years. The O-1 lasts 2 to 3 years. Just say you don’t want high skill immigration

@chriswithans How is this good? The number of Green Cards issued per year is fixed in law and will not change, so it'll be the same amount of foreigners, just less-well integrated ones because you're forcing out those who are already in the US with jobs and letting those from outside in.

Initially this seemed like a minimal impactful policy to me but now that I'm hearing all these complaints about it from the usual people, I'm wondering why it didn't happen on day 1 and am hoping it holds up in court. (And quite honestly, I'm genuinely shocked that people were allowed to stay for long periods of time on expired visas just because they *merely applied* for a green card? Like being allowed to attend Harvard because you were never formally rejected.)
Chris Paxton@chris_j_paxton

Force all our best researchers to leave the USA and go back to their home countries if they want to become Americans. Complete destruction of America's competitive advantage. Probably the worst policy i have ever seen and it's facing some stiff competition

I got my green card while in the country. I thought it was a great way to speed up the integration into the US. It also made it much easier to visit immigration offices in person. It would be a shame to lose that IMO. PS. I got here due to my wife being a citizen.
