The TV3 curse. Before TV3 became a thing in 1998, RTE had exclusive access for every Ireland game known to man. That was until Ireland's Euro 2000 campaign, when the nation's fourth tv station bought the rights for every away fixture - which single handedly cost us qualification. The Boys in Green managed to win every home game in that campaign, beating Croatia 2-0, Malta 5-0, Macedonia 1-0 and Yugoslavia 2-1 in an epic game - all shown on RTE. When it came to to the reverse, we lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia in Belgrade (ok, fair enough). We only managed to scrape past Malta 2-3 after blowing a two goal lead, which felt like a defeat. Lost 1-0 to Croatia with a last second "Suker" punch in Zagreb and who could forget being 13 seconds away from qualification in Skjope, when the Macedonians single handedly tore up my dreams with the last kick (or header) of the game. Still don't believe me? How about 2006, when the Boys in Green got battered by Cyprus 5-2 in Nicosia and all Ronnie Whelan could muster was "it's Cyprus.." I mean, we all knew it was TV3... Then you had that 2-1, last gasp epic victory over the mighty San Marino. Who could forget Steve Staunton being interviewed under a tree? Yup, you guessed it, TV3. So, there you have it folks.
