An acquaintance with 3 kids recently asked me, in hushed tones, what we thought about going for 4. Specifically, she wanted to know about disapproval from friends and family.
Shawn Regan@Shawn_Regan

Paul Ehrlich in 1970: "The FCC should see to it that large families are always treated in negative light on television." If that doesn't work, then the government should "legislate the size of the family" and "throw you in jail if you have too many" kids.

Hyperbole about addiction is cute until a law professor who writes for the NYTimes thinks it's a legitimate reason to nix the First Amendment for you. Internet addiction is a fiction, just like addiction to fossil fuels, video games, and your grandma's cheesecake.
Ari Cohn@AriCohn

"Manipulative speech" isn't excluded from First Amendment protection (and it's insane to suggest that it should be), so no, you can't be forced to show ID for it. It's also crazy that people forget how DHS literally was just busted trying to get identity info from platforms.

@astupple @jeremykauffman This discussion would have been more interesting if it wasnt a carrot but instead a bucketload of tiny legos, foot hazard. Easy to spill, difficult to pick up. Asymmetric warfare :)

Why not whip him with a belt to get him to pick it up? Because, among other things, he will come to certain conclusions about Dad, that might-makes-right, that behaviors matter more than understanding, that picking up your mess is about avoiding pain rather than being a respectful person. Mindless behavior-matching is a short term win (parental convenience) that comes with long term harms (resentment, mistrust, confusion). Getting kids to behave is a high time-preference attitude. The long game is the only one worth playing.

When one of my children was 2, he dropped a carrot on the floor and refused to pick it up. He was told he would not be allowed to do anything fun or have any privileges until he picked up the carrot. He refused for hours. He cried and screamed. He even napped, woke up, and continued to refuse. His commitment was impressive. We held fast. Until he picked up the carrot, he would receive nothing other than water and basic food to live. After over 4 hours, he picked up the carrot and apologized. It's the longest he's fought us to this day. Disobedience is a choice of parents. You get the behavior that you tolerate.

Scott Alexander revealed yesterday he has no control over his toddlers. SF’s most influential grey tribe rationalist wordcel, one of our generation’s few categorical “public intellectuals”, and a psychiatrist (lol), outsmarted by his own children—from 6 months every child is capable of manipulate dumb & weak parents unable to discipline them; but he isn’t dumb, just a “rationalist”. What are we supposed to make of this?

Paul Thomas Anderson dropped out of NYU film school after two days. He made the decision after a screenwriting professor said “if you’re here to write Terminator 2, just leave now.” His film education was “watching other movies” (and listening to the director’s commentary).

I had a great chat with @PaulRRobichaud - but we covered so much ground we've needed a part 2. Therefore, there's another chance to get in with more questions about Paul's areas of interest and expertise. Just respond to the tweet quoted below.

I'll be speaking with mathematician Paul Raymond-Robichaud (@PaulRRobichaud) soon for an ongoing series of conversations with the @ConjectureInst fellows. Paul's research and other interests are found here conjectureinstitute.org. Drop any questions for him below!

@astupple @chrisman I noticed this when my kid good stuck in the “Battery Zone” act 2 in Sonic Mania. He reverted to playing Green Hills (the first and easiest level) over and over again for weeks. Then suddenly, he tried Battery Zone again was able to sail through it and the next few levels.

@chrisman Crucial point. Let kids do "dumb stuff" so they learn the basics, and then move up to more sophisticated tastes. Insisting on sophisticated tastes at the start just misses the point.

The way to develop higher order skills to make the lower order skills take up less brainpower. That's why it's just fine to let kids read lots of comics instead of "real" books. You're making the lower order (decoding individual words) automatic. This makes the higher order (comprehension) possible.
