First up Woman’s Hour and its ‘misogyny’ interview with Raewyn Connell, who it described as a ‘feminist sociologist studying the social theory of gender relations and masculinity’. While there might be reasons to interview a man about the misogyny of claiming to be a woman, only a team of raging activists would pretend he is a woman and ask him about his personal experience of ‘misogyny’ (of which he has none) and how to tackle it. He had no relevant expertise, except in his own perpetuation of misogyny, he added nothing, wasn’t asked the obvious questions, and was a poor, stumbling and dull radio guest. Would you rather live in a society where a man is free to criticise religious practices or one where such a man might be dragged to the public square to be damned and shamed as a blasphemer? Instead of simply disagreeing with Nick, these MPs are calling for him to be “investigated”. This is exactly why an Islamophobia definition is so dangerous. People need to be able to disagree and debate without the authorities weighing in.

Labour’s Islamophobia definition is unlawful and infringes free speech. Atheists such as Richard Dawkins could be silenced by Labour’s new anti-Muslim hostility definition. Dawkins has regularly criticised Islam for its oppressive qualities. The Free Speech Union has sent a pre-action letter to the Communities Secretary, threatening judicial review if the definition and guidance are not withdrawn immediately. In our letter, we also warned about the chilling effect this definition will have on women’s ability to comment on and critique aspects of Islam, and the acts of those who follow it, that are deeply harmful to women in particular. “For example, women, and indeed Muslim women (in particular) may feel inhibited from speaking about actions such as so-called ‘honour killings’ where such speech may be labelled and regulated as anti-Muslim hostility”. The definition could also hinder campaigners working to expose practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), predatory grooming gangs, and abuses of women’s rights. Another problem is that this definition could penalise people simply for recounting historical events. This could impact Sikhs, for example, when marking the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who defended the Hindu faith against Muslims. In our letter, we warned that the definition and guidance could lead to “offensive comments” — or perfectly legitimate expressions of free speech — being logged as “anti-Muslim hostility”. This would create a new form of non-crime hate incident (NCHI), inhibiting public debate while wasting police time and taxpayers’ money. French courts have allowed a Muslim migrant to go free after the brutal murder of Sarah Halimi,his 65 year old Jewish neighbor. Halimi, a retired doctor, teacher, and widowed mother of 3, was beaten to death on 4 April 2017. For more than an hour, her screams echoed around her apartment building, while her murderer alternated between shrieking “Allahu Akbar!” and howling verses from the Quran. He then threw her lifeless body from a third story window. The French courts have ruled that this man cannot be held criminally responsible for his brutal act because he’d smoked marijuana before beating Sarah to death. I don’t speak French, so I can’t say how long it took neighbors to call 911. I don’t know why the beating was allowed to reach its fatal conclusion with what appears to have been no attempt at any kind of meaningful intervention by French police. The suspect was unarmed and outnumbered, and trapped in the victim’s apartment, but he was permitted to go on beating her for an hour. I have almost 20 years’ experience in law enforcement. I cannot explain why. I don’t want to think that Sarah’s Judaism played a part in the length of the torture she was allowed to endure, or in the lackadaisical response by French police. I don’t want to think that French courts simply don’t care about dead Jews, or that Europe as a whole has given up all attempts at enforcing the law within the Muslim migrant community. I don’t want to - but what other conclusion is there to draw?

Less than a week after the Communities Secretary, Steve Reed, published the definition — assuring the public it would not stifle legitimate criticism of Islam — Nick Timothy is facing calls to resign after criticising mass ritual prayer by Muslims in Trafalgar Square. He has been accused of “anti-Muslim hostility” by a Labour MP and reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. This is a Muslim blasphemy law by the back door. Today, the Free Speech Union has sent a pre-action letter to Steve Reed, threatening judicial review if the definition and guidance are not withdrawn immediately. ‘BBC Man’s Hour’ have done it again. Inviting a man onto today’s show to discuss the “extreme misogyny” highlighted in The Manosphere - Louis Theroux’s recent documentary. Dr Raewyn Connell lived as a man until the age of 62 before transitioning. That means his experience is of being a 'trans woman' - not of the lifelong misogyny experienced by actual women. Which raises an obvious question: why not platform a woman - with both the professional expertise and personal experience - to speak on this issue?
