fwiw my opinion has changed a bit! given stuff i've observed in myself and others i suspect that the "resolution" (clarity, information, integrity?) by which one part of experience is experienced "by" another part of experience can vary a lot. you can have, for example, experience clusters that are both bound in the same moment, which each experience themselves very clearly, but which have only fuzzy or lossy access to one another- a noticeable change in one might be beneath the threshold of a just-noticeable-difference at the other end of some sort of bottleneck. i think it should definitely be defined better what this indra's-net-like total interreference of experience is, but this is just an informal pointer

@frideswyth was talking to @ecdysian the other day about how either there is an unconscious or it all ultimately lives in the "microwave background radiation" noise in the phenomenal fields. possibly both

has anyone done a rigorous and detailed phenomenological map of the stages of falling asleep?

kids have a certain sense of "forbidden," dark hallways or tv channels that are just generically and intensely bad news without much reason why. this is kinda cool, honestly. the world should have more strong and inexplicable vibes attached to things in it

i wish nootropics people cared more about happiness- lots of chems cause tense excitement and others genuinely lift mood and it's hard to tell from the way they're talked about

the early internet has left an odd cultural impression of being scary. close to the void, maybe, like oil platforms or rickety bridges built into nothing- exposed to the outside and since then, we've been trying to recreate that feeling in nostalgia and fiction. whatever howling outside it was "exposed to" is something we're collectively fascinated with, on some level, even though it was seemingly nothing at all

how many revolutionary (if poorly applied) pieces of psychotechnology never spread because they're solely used by internet weirdos who no one else wants to emulate?

people treat arousal like it was arbitrarily shaped by evolutionary need and has only like, coincidental connections with other experiences for some reason. this doesn't make sense to me? it has a unique core to it that fits well into the "standard model"

yeah idk how much this is even an issue- there are layers of perceived volition which imo essentially just parasitize the actual decision processes taking place, form folds on top of it that are attended to as if they're the deciding. feeling like you're making no choices can be good actually!

are there any good books on the qualia of mathematics? like Polya's 'How to Solve It' but including what kind of qualia one might experience along the way? Hadamard on the psychology of mathematical invention comes to mind, but I want something a bit more tactical?

Fetters inquiry continues to be extremely psychoactive. I just took a nap and had an experience like being shot by a laser?? Like a wavefront of *some* kind of feeling moving through the torso and head. High-frequency lava? It just happened and I can barely remember it

has anybody tried more elaborate versions of the long-term upside-down glasses experiment? it's wild if they actually saw things upside-down afterward. what are the limits of what the brain will adapt to, that way? hyper-wide FOV? arbitrary rotation? fragmented vision?
