@MeganTStevenson @haroldpollack @ben_golub .@haroldpollack originally pointed out an irony.@ top 50 colleges, more than 1/2 come from upper 20% income dist who pay approx 50-90. Are you quibbling with the number 90k? or the general point that colleges are an institution that correlate w increase in income inequality

much respect but i believe this to be a bad take material rewards are extravagant for smart people in many jobs with negative social value. conditional on a scholar doing important, good work, that person is donating a lot to society it's fine for there to be little things like a taxi ride -- if you prefer such people to take a sort of vow of poverty you thin the pool of donors to save a few bucks
Harold Pollack@haroldpollack

Pet peeve: unself-aware academic junket culture. We spend $2000 to attend conferences where 75% of speakers rail against American inequality, while we pay a $1000 registration fee, splurge on $75 dinners, and take a $50 uber ride to avoid a 3-stop subway ride that wld cost $2.50.

@ben_golub I don't know... I would never judge anyone for enjoying the fine things in life. But at the same time I think there is a bleak irony in what @haroldpollack is describing

@conor64 1/2 Perhaps the gov should have been the institution to weigh the benefits & costs (of various measures), but they deferred at every turn to what public health said (at least in Cali). When teachers jumped the vaccine line and we still didn’t open schools, revealed that …

A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by the end of the Covid-19 emergency trust in public health institutions had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.

A shark can swim faster than me. I can run faster than a shark. So in a triathlon against a shark, it would all come down to who is the better cyclist.

@jasonfurman Imagine(?!) the admin just ignores it. Then, this is just the “ruling” of the law. It will be victory for the “rule” of law if they don’t get away with that without consequence

A thrilling victory for the rule of law. And even better that the rule of law will mean better economic outcomes for America and the world.

Foiled. And I can't tell if I'm disappointed or proud: The kids quickly recognized me as a shared foe trying to grab the surplus for myself. They unionized and refused to bid against each other. Organized labor negotiated a settlement that better served their collective interests

Just got to the airport with the kids and was pleasantly surprised to have gotten one kiddo upgrade. Problem: I have two kids. So I'm holding an auction and they're each bidding on how many times they will unload the dishwasher over Thanksgiving. Highest bid gets the upgrade.
