@D_Molatoli I am simply asking for clarification regarding your statement that Iman arrived in Iran when Khomeini arrived back from Paris. Khomeini arrived in Tehran in 1979 and Iman was born in 1985, i think.

We have South Africans like our incredible veteran journalist Iman Rappetti who lived and worked in Iran at some point in her life. In this memoir of hers, she documents a chapter of her life when she and her husband at the time, who was Muslim, and Iman had converted to Islam as well, chose to go and live in Iran. Her son was born at Shahid Beheshti hospital. She learnt to read and write Persian and ended up moving from the Holy City of Qom to go work for the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting Authority (IRIB) in Northern Tehran, hosting a TV current affairs programme that featured political commentators, guest dignitaries and religious commentators. She shares fascinating stories about their life in Iran, the culture, the religious culture and practices, the political environment during the time when, as they arrived, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was returning home from fourteen years in nomadic exile in Paris since 1979. I've just been thinking about how she must be feeling with this US/Israel war against Iran, and how other South Africans that have lived in Iran also feel. Iman's writing style is riverting, humorous and absolutely authentic. She's very funny. 😅 Her vocabulary is out of this world. I recommend the book.

Trump has admitted today that the US sent in a great deal of weaponry to the protestors in Iran before they invaded Israel. I was never convinced that genuine protestors woulds attach hospitals that they and their families use or kill police, etc. That was always very suspicious. Trump said they used the Kurds as a conduit and that the Kurds kept a lot of guns for their own use. The Kurds have become total mercenaries. As for Operation Epic Fury, it continues wreaking havoc in Iran and some in Israel too. Meanwhile Gaza is still blockaded and the suffering of the West Bank is ignored.

The US bases in the Gulf do not turn the Gulf into satellite states or strip their sovereignty. They’re part of mutually agreed upon defense partnerships similar to those between the US and other states in Europe and Asia. That said, this model requires a reset and the same is true regarding the Gulf’s relationship with Iran.

As bombs reign and rain in global politics along with fake news and hate - independent media and informed journalism is critical. So, a couple of months ago, I finally decided to subscribe to the @dailymaverick when @jfgreen1 published an unequivocal editorial on Gaza. Recently, I stopped my subscription because apart from of its lack of a moral compass in relation to the US and Israel’s wars and systematic reporting on the Gaza genocide; the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank; the destruction of democracy in the US; Sudanese genocide and the UAE; total ignorance on China and more. (A few editorials is not enough cover for platforming genocide denialists or US flunkies.) I have no expectation of a moral compass from News24 or the Business Day/Sunday Times group. But does Daily Maverick not punt itself as an independent media outlet? Instead, its coverage of the questions above is a boring repetition of Reuters and others with the occasional liberal whose Zionist underwear is worn over their clothes. Devoid of knowledge, bereft of analysis, an absence of people bombed, journalists murdered, the voices of victims perfectly illustrates the mainstream “liberal” US media template followed by the Daily Maverick. I have respect for many journalists at your media outlet @SunePayne @ferialhaffajee @marianne_thamm @becsplanb and others but the failure to invest in journalists to provide an independent and progressive international analysis is dangerous.
