you’re not wrong, but the progressive/liberal proposals come in two forms: 1) systemic reform that reduces the number of people whose sociopathic and destructive behavior becomes life-destroying. there are plenty of people with wealth and safety who, had they been raised by unfit parents in an unstable home, would’ve been destined for the streets too. Liberals want to remove as many barriers as possible between that stability and the kids who need it most- to address healthcare accessibility, education and gainful employment without which people run out of luck. 2) the form you correctly characterized by their flaws- offering help for people on the cusp of homelessness or social resources for those who have already fallen. you’re correct that many people have been so broken by their own life experiences are not capable or willing to get better. It is a spectrum, though, and making these support systems more comprehensive and reliable might make a cynical addict more open to the possibility that their life can be fixed. But when you’re on the street because you feel like the system pushed you there, of course you’re not going to suddenly trust that system to help you when all you’ve seen it do is leave you in the lurch.

i truly wish i lived such a sheltered and naive life. most people on the streets who aren’t mentally ill have had a long string of making poor decisions across their lifetime and by continuously mistreating others have exhausted any goodwill. you cannot legislate away sociopathic and destructive behavior. you will never spend enough to plug the holes these people have in their personalities. every progressive/liberal proposal for dealing with homelessness has come from such an empty-headed academic perspective. that’s why they always fail, but not until tens of billions of dollars are lit ablaze.

It’s incredible that we’re about 20 years into the current homelessness crisis and not a single political faction can put together a coherent analysis of the problem and a realistic solution.

Dexter Original Sin took the impossible task it was given and made a fan out of me. This prequel existing without sacrificing a critical part of the faithfulness to the original wasn’t something I put any emotional stake in, but they did it. The casting was superb, the writing and production was as good as it had ever been, and it fulfilled the elusive expectation fans had, emotional boxes they couldn’t have told you they hoped to have checked. that’s why people say “they’re undocumented immigrants, not illegals” “Illegals” does imply that their existence is a crime, even if you don’t mean it that way. English is a precise language, and your failure to use it precisely doesn’t make you correct, and it doesn’t change the objective meaning of the words you choose. We don’t call prison escapees “illegals” even though they are illegally outside of prison.

calling some an “illegal” is dehumanizing because it implies that their existence itself is a crime. it’s not something I typically prioritize policing people on- in my original reply I made a point to say that regardless of her word choice, she still failed at keeping the audience on her side and then responded to being fired by wrongly identifying the reason for it.

if you talk to them, it’ll become clear immediately that they were told by Trump et al that Biden had the border wide open and we had millions of unknown people flooding in. that message was being repeated ad nauseum on right wing media. Diagnosing their response as “they hate immigrants” is overly simplified and you are just playing into right-wing hands when you do that. Yes, of course, there are overt racists that do hate brown people. There are right wing voters who have way more prejudice than they’ll ever realize, let alone address, but these folks live and work with legal immigrants who they respect. Putting my midwestern coworkers in the same box as white nationalists is just feeding into the divisiveness that results in folks voting against their own values.
