It simply means they are in the country illegally, that is, undocumented. Whether the immigration system works or not in the US is a separate issue.

calling some an “illegal” is dehumanizing because it implies that their existence itself is a crime. it’s not something I typically prioritize policing people on- in my original reply I made a point to say that regardless of her word choice, she still failed at keeping the audience on her side and then responded to being fired by wrongly identifying the reason for it.
