@profjmb You literally saw a news article about a 17 year old doing a cool math thing and said, "Yeah but who do they want to fuck? I desperately need to know how this 17 year old gets it on." You, in this situation, perceive yourself as the normal one.

To those interested in AGP: The article linked in the following post is about a trans woman, Hannah Cairo, who is a math prodigy. Although she is out as transgender (which has been disappeared from this article), and is definitely later-onset, AGP is of course not mentioned.

@BlueskyLibs @atrupar @ByronDonalds @CrackerBarrel It's bizarre to react in such histrionic terms to a logo changing. Connecting it to his relationship to his religion is one such histrionic way. And I have literally no idea how this logo is supposed to be "less woke" than the original.

In college, I worked at @CrackerBarrel in Tallahassee. I even gave my life to Christ in their parking lot. Their logo was iconic and their unique restaurants were a fixture of American culture. No one asked for this woke rebrand. It’s time to Make Cracker Barrel Great Again 🇺🇸

@BlueskyLibs @atrupar @ByronDonalds @CrackerBarrel It's normal to dislike a logo. It's abnormal to connect your distaste for a logo to wokeness, giving yourself to Christ in a parking lot, or your love of Donald Trump. Those are highly bizarre things to do.

@atrupar @ByronDonalds @CrackerBarrel Why is it not ok to de disenchanted about something you once found favorable, and to express it? Don’t think anyone is actually losing sleep, but seems ok to have an opinion.

@dru_ed @LittleMammith He was asked about a period of change or growth in his life, and spent the entire paper talking about how cool and successful he is, only pivoting to a vague, "I've changed because I want to go to college now," thing near the end.

@LittleMammith I don’t see the problem with the essay. He would benefit from a more well rounded education. He’s seeking meaning and purpose. College is a terrible environment, has been for decades, but he might get something out of it.

I don't want to dunk on some poor teenager but it is unbelievably obvious why a college would not admit someone based on a statement like this and I'm honestly bewildered there weren't people in this kid's life who tried to explain that to him.

@Glaukopos @LeaveHeardAlone @LittleMammith Notably, this realization is incredibly uninteresting. Literally every person at a college decided at some point that they wanted to go to college. What sets this guy apart is that he gives off the vibe of thinking college is beneath him.

@Glaukopos @LeaveHeardAlone @LittleMammith And that description is, itself, very odd and limited. What about him actually changed? What triggered it besides a vague sense of ennui? What was the process of that change? the whole thing seems to be, "I changed because I decided to go to college."

@fritzdev @LittleMammith @Glaukopos The question was, "Tell us about a period of personal growth," not, "Tell us about how much of a badass you are for two pages." The personal growth part is relatively brief, kinda wonky, and inexplicably amounts to, "I've grown because I've decided to go to college."

@CurtisLaraque @ArkhamMoon Then argue that, I guess. She made an absolutely ludicrous and damning accusation on very little evidence. That seems pretty bad to me.

@ArkhamMoon The irony still stands. You assume he didn't need to apologize (or gathered that from some evidence I missed). I could *easily* argue she had no reason to apologize either. The irony still stands. My statement was very narrow and limited. Your extrapolation is not my fault.

@biggestjoel @hausofdecline What are you basing your posts on, anyway? Have you seen the movie? I would not go so hard in the paint for something I haven't even seen myself. By the way, look for my new youtube video dropping tonight: Every Disney Channel Movie, Watched by Me

@BigAreolaEnthus @mugabist @mustachetoilet However, you will also not hang out with her because she's a terrible person. She was rejected by bigots, and then put all her energy into alienating everyone else who was rejected by bigots. That is worth laughing at.

@BigAreolaEnthus @mugabist @mustachetoilet But this is the whole point. Yes, she's been abandoned by her family, as well as all the other transphobes of this world. However, she could be hanging out with you. That was an option available to her after being disowned.

@Xenoimpulse Yeah, this is exactly what I was thinking. It's all history of the field and early results, which is great when you're not sure what you're interested in but not so great if you are pursuing a particular path in life.

steelman: this would be a truly excellent high school curriculum, with the caveat that the theology would need to be reduced and integrated into history and that it needs a lot more STEM and a few touches on modern philosophy.

@Pirlo_Prop @Gingerroot775 @JeremyTate41 And, for an actual practicing mathematician or philosopher, more recent work is going to be highly pertinent to what they do. Basically, this curriculum is 100% gen ed with little of the critical specialization typically offered to undergrad students

@Pirlo_Prop @Gingerroot775 @JeremyTate41 This is the essential problem too with fixating on Plato. Neither Euclid nor Plato were wrong, precisely. They both had good ideas and made advancements in their fields. But amazing stuff happened since then too.
