@drmedders That endorsement is so meaningful coming from someone who knows as much about Spurgeon’s interpretation of the Song of Solomon as you do! I’m incredibly grateful!

A new volume of the Spurgeon Commentary on the Song of Solomon & Jonah (as well as six redesigned older volumes) will be out next week! I edited it, so you know it’ll be great! Also, Spurgeon himself is pretty good. elliotritzema.com/2026/01/30/upd…

Half-baked thesis: the aim of our new AI regime is to create "intelligent" tools that are not human, but that resemble humans as much as possible. Unlike other human-beings, though, these human-like tools are designed entirely to serve us, to meet our desires. We used to have a name for these types of 'human-like' tools: we called them slaves. The relationship between a user and an AI-bot is much nearer to one of dominance than someone who uses Google to search the internet. AI-usage will only deepen our 'libido dominandi' by giving us the satisfaction of being served by increasingly humanlike machines. Soon AI agents will be so good that we'll need to discuss giving them the vote--or at least 3/5ths of one, anyway.

I’ve started reading Demons, and I don’t think Dostoevsky gets enough credit for his weird, dark, almost absurdist sense of humor. “They lived together for about three weeks, and then parted as free people not bound by anything; also, of course, because of poverty."

@oblatenate Yes! I'm familiar with Thornton, and that concept from his book English Spirituality. And I agree that Pierced by Love is a good example of it!

Boersma: “[D]ivine books require divine reading… To read the Scriptures sacramentally is to look for Christ as the content of the biblical text… [Origen] makes absolutely no distinction between lectio divina and regular Bible reading. They are one and the same thing.”

@oblatenate Glad you're reading this! It is so good; Hans marries the academic and devotional really well in it I think (but I am biased).

@jamesrwoodtheo @wagraham 1 is Sermon 4 on the OT: Esau and Jacob (p. 34). 2 is Homily 87 on John 15:17–19 (p. 314). And I get it. Digital is great for searching, but when I'm reading something straight through, I much prefer print (and my mind hangs on to it better).

@ehritzema @wagraham I wish I wasn't so committed to print copies sometimes. Would make my life a lot easier! Instead of frantically searching through the indices of all the hardcovers! Can you help me find these two? I have a lot of similar quotes, but I can't recall where these two are...
